The nut should spin on freely until it gets to the nylon insert though. If it's not doing this I would check you have the correct threaded nut first.
Yes, first make sure you have the correct threads on the nuts, you should have about 5-6 turns before you reach the nylon part.
I would also check your ball joints are shimmed corrently as there should be at least a bit of resistance to spinning if they are.
I have never had to use a jack under the tie rods or hub/ball joint, usually I can manually push the joint to the point where the taper is in far enough that it resists free spinning.
