Shame I'll be in Victoria, but at least I'll (hopefully) be admiring my freshly-concrete-filled trenches :)

(They'll either be filled with concrete or water, anyway  )

Wrong answer!!

And how is that Taj Mahal of a shed coming along anyway Simon???

Progress is being made, I've dug 6 foot deep trenches for blinding footings which are (should be) being poured this weekend, weather permitting. Slab in January, then we get a move on :D

Quicksand, more or less. The site is cut-and-fill, half the slab is on the cut, half on the fill. The perimeter beam on the fill has to go down to stable ground, which on this slope is 6'.

No biggie, I've been having fun with the backhoe attachment on the bobcat, learning to dig in a straight line! :D

(I'm sweating the forecast though, the pour is due on Saturday.. both concrete and from the sky... )

Bit more done today and yesterday, along with dropping our van up for some warranty work, and chores etc etc.

First thing was to install the oil lines for the TD04 turbo. This was a quick job as the fittings on the turbo are all BSP and just need a BSP-barb fitting. What I did need though was an oil feed and an oil drain - the oil drain I will use existing, and the oil feed I will use existing too but just the pipe - so I cut it off the original fitting and bent it to shape so it can up on the inside of the turbo housing:
Image

Then I turned my atention to the speedo drive. Unfortunately the gearbox shifter cables are in the way of using the gearbox take-off as a drive for the Digidash magnetic pick-up. So I turned up a blanking disc and sealed it off.
Image

The speedo pick-up magnets will now have to come off one of the driveshafts.

Next was the accelerator pedal and cable. I had planned on using the Starlet item as I couldnt find where I had put the Mini one. I then remembered that Hallsey said dont use the Starlet one as it was heaps of work. So I went in search on the Mini one and finally found it . It was then a case of hole-sawing a hole for the cabel entry, between the catch can and the brake master cylinder:
Image

The cable length was a bit long, but it didnt seem to bind:
Image

Next was to cut a long slot into the under-dash shelf to allow for the pedal shaft to stick through along its entire length of travel:
Image

I made sure to bolt through the original bracket on the inside, as this gives me the rubber back-stop for the pedal shaft. Pencil optional:
Image

Then it was a case cutting and joining the top of the Starlet shaft with the body of the Mini pedal:
Image

But I liked the Starlet pedal so much that I decided on using that part as well. So, cut and weld it on:
Image

And then a lick of paint and it was all done:
Image

More soon, cheers,
Tricky

Nice work Tricky, very similar to what I've done myself. Can't believe you're this far along without doing that pedal. How have you been imaginary driving without it??

How'd the bbq go?

Cheers

There I fixed it for ya, picky...

And I was looking at a mini today that really did have a gas pedal... Not sure if he's on ausmini but his car is amazing and by the sounds of it will very soon fit into this category, LPG and all.

I have just fitted the starlet cable as is, no shortening required for me. The angle I got was ok as well, so I've not seen any binding. Can't really test it as it's all in bits again.

You can see here where mine comes out though, I think it's a bit lower then yours so maybe I got a better angle on it. Can you try another cable, sometimes they chew up the inside and get stiff. Corolla one might fit as well. I have found a lot of stuff on the halfcut is interchangeable with my AE82.

And yeah, it was very wet down here on Saturday night too. Lucky it cleared up on Sunday so I could go for a quick spin with Hallsey in his beast. Quite motivational, hopefully will be full speed ahead on it again by end of January.

Cheers

Hey MM,

Looks similar to mine, but a bit less of an acute angle.
It seems to work ok, and if it ends up binding or fraying I will just get a shorter one made up. Until then, It seems to do the job.

Hallsey told me he took you for a spin - glad to see you were motivated by it. All he has to do now is bring it up here so he can motivate me!! I hope you get it done by the end of Jan!!

Cheers,
Tricky

Another day in the shed today. It was day of doing small jobs which I have put off doing or not been in a position to finish. First order of business was to install the cable galleries to the doors, to allow the cables for the speakers, remote locks and electric windows to operate.

I scrounged the wreckers a while back and found these little beauties - they are off a falcon of some sort:
Image

They take a 30mm hole each end. So, damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead - out with the holesaw and into it. First the body hole - opposite the main dash rail for maximum support - the cables willl come down the hole that originally had the wires for the dome light switch:
Image

And then the door - offset vertically by 50mm to allow for the doubling up of the rubber - there is only a 15mm gap at the door jamb:
Image

And this is what they look like installed - being concertina rubber they have a fair range of movement in both directions:
Image

Hopefully when the door is closed they will be sqashed into the gap between door and jamb:
Image

And extended - a wide range of movement:
Image

Next job is to fill and fair a bit of bodywork. There is a hole in the passenger door from a bubble in the filler/undercoat thast happened when I wleded the post on for th door handle. I ground the bubble out and then set about refilling the hole and getting it fair. Then once it was sanded it was time for some spray putty:
Image

Putty applied and left to dry. I will sand this smooth tomorrow:
Image

Next it was time to tackle the roof. I had sanded a large area of the roof to affix the rear spoiler. In fact originally it as a totally different spoiler I was going to go with but n th end the one I ended up using was a 100% better. Problem is that for the other one it required a lot more of the finished area removed to get down to te bare metal. You can just see in this picture what it looked like originally:
Image

Image

So, it was a case of taping off the required area, and putting down a very thin layer of filler:
Image

Image

Then it was a case of sanding all the high spots off with a board with 40grit paper until its relatively smooth, them finer grades of paper until its smooth. Like really smooth with no divots or ridges or high or low spots - then tape off again ready for spray putty:
Image

Image

Then, once the putty has dried its time to sand ultra smooth with 400grit wet and dry until its like glass. Finished now, but need to fair in the spoiler with the body proper. Thats a job for tomorrow. All in all very pleased with the result seeing I am not a body man, but I got it like glass in the end:

More tomorrow.

Cheers,
Tricky
