From memory the bike engine was mounted sideways and a chain running from the drive sprocket to a small diff in the center of the subframe .

There are other things an R1 works in :D ,I know it's a bit off topic of mini's but a mini isn't much heavier than this and this thing is scary fast.

just out of interest..

how frequently would these bike engines need to be rebuilt?

I remember reading a web site by a guy who hada number of kit cars & track specials who was disappointed with engine life, rebuilding the R1 after 400 ? track hours and finding oval bores, etc.

Fun, but perhaps not worth it?

400 hrs is a long time ,especially flat out on a track, that's like 50 bathurst races. If my motor lasts that long I would be happy. Bike engines are the same as car engines , if you keep fresh oil up them and regular mantainance and generally look after them they will last as long a car motor.

sounds promising.. 100,000 miles isn't unheard of.

That's in a bike. The longevity is supposedly severely reduced when fitted to a car.

The biggest problem is the clutch, it"s only designed to move 170kg's of bike not 650kg's of car, but as I said if you treat it right it will look after you.Same as anything. The motor in the buggy above came out of a sidecar that was raced at top level for two seasons, it has also been in the buggy for a year or so and not driven lightly but well maintaned and it still goes strong.
