You need to take the head off take it to a engine reconditioners and get them to fit hardened valve seats and possibly new exhaust valves.

Probably only needs hardened valve seats on the exhaust valves.

Oh and was there something about different valve guides :?:

Can't remember the exact cost.. around $200 I think? But people reckon it's cheaper to keep using super with flash lube... I rather having the unleaded head.. it's much easier, you don't have to worry about additives

You supply the head....

$35 per seat FITTED

+ they will want to do a "service" on the head too.....wet blast, machine faces, lap valves and assemble = $120

Yeah we got quoted 400 for the whole job. Thats shaved, and all relevant parts added to the head to run unleaded.

Just use flashlube Marlene. Works out to be about 2-3c per tank. Why do you want to convert? If you are going to do that, then might as well get the head reconditioned. In fact whack on a 1098 12G202 head instead for more oomph. (I have a spare one and so will many people...)

There is another option, an inline fuel catalyst for around $200.

next time you pull up to the pump instead of lifting the "super" you lift up the 98 ultimate/optimax etc etc

It will limit the size of your exhaust valves if you convert to unleaded. If you want to get maximum performance out of your head then stick with super unleaded plus a dose of flashlube and fit the big valves (36 x 31 mm).

I've got a fuelstar in my moke and I haven't had a problem- simple to fit- put it in between the fuel line from the pump to the carby. Took 5 mins. :D

Mack,
I'd pull the head off it for a look after 12 months..
There was a test done in UK a while back, where they ran a stock 998 Mini flat out round a track for 500 miles, after doing a valve service and fitting a catalyst (can't remember what the brand was).
The deal was if any valve recession was evident after that, the owner would get a new head.
Guess who got a new head then... :x

<edit> Not saying NONE of these things work, but be careful there are shonks out there!

What do I do? Barney has Rover unleaded seats, and Ha-Ha runs Flashlube because his ex valves are too big for inserts...
Having seen what happens to a 1098 head in 6 months with NO additive, I know Flashlube works. I get less valve and seat wear now than I used to get with leaded fuel.

Fair enough! I'll definitely do that then. :(

Might end up fast-tracking the 1100 head I want for Mack if It all goes bad. Cheers for the heads up! :D

Is super the same as leaded fuel? is it worth the effort to change a mini onto unleaded?
