Gday team!

Got myself a A+ 1275 on Friday! :D I know nothing about engines or rebuilds but have a friend to step me through when I get stuck.

My plan is to pull it down and slowly rebuild it and learn a heap on the way.

Question what bolts do I need to go in the clutch cover holes? I have borrowed a engine trolly off a friend that will make it so easy. But I need to buy some bolts to screw engine to trolly.

IM SOOOOOOO EXCITED!

ALL the threads in the gearbox are UNC. The clutch cover [ aka wok] ones are 5/16 UNC.

BTW the engine block threads are all UNF, except the head stud holes which are 3/8 UNC.
And 7 stud holes in the top of the head are UNC also.
[edit] as are the fuel pump and oil filter stud holes...
The rest are UNF. :P

So I hope this post works!

Today I started pulling the engine down. Found myself a brilliant mechanic near where I live. He got me the engine and appreciates why im doing it. So he said go home pull it all down and take the head block and pistons back and we will go from there.

Ill try to take photos and update things as I go if anyone thinks they could be bothered reading it!

First question I have removed all the nuts on the top of the head (But not touched the running gear). The head is well and truly stuck to the block. Do I just bash it with a hammer to separate it?

You can use a compothane (Hard plastic) hammer. Dont use a screwdriver on the sealing surfaces. Also try putting some string into no 1 cylinder on the compression stroke.

Make sure you have loosened all the rockers so they can all wiggle, remove the rocker assembly in one piece, then lift out all the pushrods. Head bolts out, Then you can give the head a bit of a tap with a block of timber and hammer.

If you got it off anyway don't worry, just loosen off the adjusters before you assemble it, otherwise it puts stress on the shaft and can bend. Also there is a sequence to tighten the bolts but that's for another day.

Did you take the rocker cover off and undo the nuts in there? Another 4 head studs in there to hold on!

Just tried to loosen the head by turning engine upside down then placing a block of timber on it and whacking it with hammer. No joy! Will see if I can phone a friend lol

2 of the head studs- the middle front, and one of the back ones, are a neater fit in the head than the others. They can rust in on old engines left for years.
Spray them with WD40, then use 2 locknuts to screw those 2 studs out, if possible.
