I do what Ian McNeil does. Direct connection to the battery, with a small two pin plug to join to the lead from the wall mounted trickle charger. Do it on all my cars and did it on the motorbike. Left them plugged in for weeks at a time, no issues.

For safety there are batteries that you can buy mainly the N55 etc squat type ones used on European cars which have a Vent tube coming out of one end at the top which you just feed through a hole down to under the car. Any fumes that battery makes are expelled to outside the car. Battery fumes cause a lot of corrosion. It is safe to charge a battery which is enclosed in the boot but just do not connect or disconnect the leads while the Charger is switched on.

Is this even the case for a sealed gel type battery??? Do they even leak anything if the battery is entirely sealed? (I have a Optima Yellow top gel type battery)

Why not just remove the battery from the boot? Rules out any risk. Only take a minute to refit the battery.

A minute?? no way... at least 5 mins. Boot board out, spare out, jack out, loosen battery tie down nuts, undo 2 terminals, lift battery out. Then all over again when you want to drive her?

... then go and book an appointment to have your lower back fixed after leaning across inside the boot with a heavy battery in hand. :(

After 30 years of swinging babies (and small children) around on my hip, my back isn't perfect, so leaning over the damn boot lid and trying to gently place a battery into its position can be a bit problematical.

I know how problematic that can be. It's the low height bit that makes it challenging for me, although it's a lot easier changing a Mini battery, than a 25kg+ battery in the cabin of a $500,000+ car.
