Sorry for my ignorance on this one fellas. Can anyone please help me understand what the small piece of white felt is for in a new set of Cooper s Lucas points? I can't see where they should be fitted and what purpose it serves.

If its about 3/8" in diameter it goes in the top of the distributor shaft on top of the screw.
Goes in before the rotor goes on. is meant to hold a couple of drops of oil to lube the main shaft to the distributor cam rotation.

I oiled my one once.

The oil crept up the rotor button and shorted out my spark

I'm sure I just did it wrong, clever people design these things, but I never did it again

On renaults, it's only meant to be two drops every few thousand miles.
Could you have over oiled it?

How can OIL possibly "Short out" when it is non conductive? The only thing I have known oil to do when it gets between points is insulate them and not allowing the two surfaces to make contact. Unless the oil is loaded with metal debris which yes then it will become a partial Conductor through the metal it is carrying but not the oil itself.

There were some aftermarket rotors sold in the recent past which would short circuit onto the dizzy shaft. Sorry I have no details what colour or who supplied them.

There are 2 possibilities depending on the shape of the piece of felt.
If its a round piece it goes under the rotor button and a few drops of oil lubricates the shaft the cam rotates on, as others have said.
If its square it is to lubricate the cam lobes.
The original type of S points (and some other early Lucas point sets?) had a bent up piece of the fixed contact plate with a slot in it adjacent to the condenser.
The felt goes in the slot, and with a few drops of oil, rubs against the cam lobes to keep them lubricated and prevent excess oil/grease being flung around inside the distributor cap.
Later point sets, GL19 etc, don't have provision for the felt.
The original type heavy spring pressure point set used a fibre/bakelite type material for the rubbing block whereas later types used a plastic material.
Does this account for the felt difference? NBI!
