Anyone done this? I'm trying to sort out the doors for El Gato. If you've followed the old build thread you'd know that Tricky grafted modern door handles into the mini doors (Honda Civic I think they might've been?), but we're having issues working out how to get them to integrate well with the mini door latches etc (ie actually getting them to open the bloody door!)

To save a bunch of hassle (which we've already endured to no real success as yet!) I'm starting to think of alternative ideas, along the lines of a (sort of) shaved doors approach. Leaving the handles still in the door to be used to pull the door open, but using electronic bear claw latches to secure the door (with central locking etc).

Haven't used them myself, had a mate fit poppers to a VW bug back in the 1990's. There are a few sites around that sell solenoid type poppers as well as the bear claw ones.

Being a clubby the new handles would have to be built to the same Australian standards that caused the change to burst proof locks in the first place. My point is - electric poppers may not be allowed as it restricts access in an accident if the power is cut off.

The handles themselves won't be covered by ADRs, and will not affect the performance of the burst-proof lock either.
However, most states consider (or at least used to) that there should be an obvious and mechanical means to open the door, so I agree that talking to your transport department's Vehicle Standards people would be the best place to start.
