Which ever welder you end buying, do not rent the bottle of argon, buy a bottle outright. I had an "e" size bottle with boc, did not change it for 7 years as I was not doing much, it cost me about $1000.00 in rental over those years. Have since purchased a bottle from Total Tools and am now breaking even.

Will also go with drmini, have a look at Tokentools, just purchased a 210 TIG welder from them. Had a pro welder come to give me some tips and he was very impressed with the welder and the price. Can now weld .5 mm, not easily, but getting there.

just to throw a spanner in the works I bought one of these last year
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271579630925 ... EBIDX%3AIT

can not fault it.......used it with mig gasless wire on a Holden HQ for rust repair
since then used the stick side of it... again cant fault it......make me look like a good welder...ha ha

a mate of mine who is a fitter and turner by trade has played with it and was totally amazed .....for the fun of it and to see how good it was..... we stuck a 8mm welding rod in just to see how well it would go.
even he was surprised that it did a good weld.
even to a point a mate of his mig died and had rung him to see if it was worth repairing or buy another and he recommended to buy one like mine.......
and he has been more than happy......only problem he had was the gasless wire.
he had run out and bought another brand .....and it was crap..
bought the same original brand wire that he first used and was happy.

I have made a change to it and replaced the earth wire and stick......to a heavy duty....plus the clamp and handle.
the only regret I have was I should have got the one that had the tig as well........but it was another hundred more and as I don't do much tig welding I couldn't justify the extra.........although it only cost $290....
I have still yet to use the gas side of this welder.......so can't comment on that.
I also can't say if it was used day in day out how it would go.........but it has welded up panel work on a HQ and built a go-kart and a few small jobs.......even stick welded a stainless muffler guard on a postie bike with great successes
both me and me mate have agreed welders have come a long way.......
cheers Neil

Thanks a lot for your input Tobermory! Was wandering if anyone had bought something like that. The only problem I see with that is it says as thin as 1.5 mm isn't metal on a mini thinner than that? Like .7 of a mm??? What thickness was the metal you were welding?

hay carter........
have no idea what the panel thickness to a 73 HQ is........but I guess it would be around the same as mini
just measured some door off cuts from a mini and it came in a 1mm......still had the paint on it.
so I would say you be right some where around .8
I must admit the stainless muffler guard we welded was paper thin......we tacked it together and I held a lump of cooper behind it as me mate welded it....

I have a Boss Weld 180ish amps that I like. But it's the only welder I've used.
