Sorry it came out the wrong way. I was just adding some details from the brochures and road tests. That's the problem with the internet. Lots of times what I try to say comes across the wrong way.

You are right about the internet. My children try to tell me not to over-read too much into others' written comments because I'm not able to hear the nuance in their voice or judge the context from body language. But no-one here takes much notice of me when I'm talking directly to them either.

My 1969 mini k came new with Olympic "Air-ride" cross-plies. When they wore out (quickly) I bought a set of Michelin ZX radials from McLeods on Parramatta Road Auburn - couldn't afford ZAX asymmetrical patterns. The difference was extreme. Driving home with the Michelins fitted was like driving a different car - it flowed along.
Sadly, the rear tyres wore out very quickly. Years later, I discovered the rear toe-in was too much for steel-belted radials and was corrected with shims.
The next was Bridgestone Textile belted radials - they were brilliant and tolerated the toe-in.
Dunlop Aquajets were very soft but didn't do much in the wet or dry. Goodyear G800s (also used on Police Ss) were good but short-lived due to an "aneurysm" between the treads. Dunlop Le Mans were excellent for general duties but are NLA. Yokohama A008s are great but they are getting very old now.

Thanks for that Mick,
Re the XAS, in the 70s there was also an XAS-FF compound. I ran them on the Fiat 124 sport, they were pretty good.
However I found Avon's Turbospeed crossplys (Formula Ford control tyre then) were 1.5 secs a lap faster around Oran Park..! And were magic in the wet. :)
Were also free, as my boss had a Formula Ford and I used to `scrub them in', aka 1/2 wear them out for him.

Ha! you get all the good jobs Kev 8) ...as impressive as XAS's were I had an incident or three with them...on the Datto 1600 with 5.5 inch rims...a small contact patch means any tyre will let go sooner or later :!:

Dunlop SP41 would have been on your 66S, unless it has NSW police history. Finding any won't be easy.

Thats them - thanks Simon. I couldn't find a photo on the net. So it looks like the police used the standard SP41 before going to the GT's as per the SLS 132.

and if you look at the large version you can read the "MADE IN AUSTRALIA" on it... that's pretty cool

does anyone know what year those SP41s were produced? were they still available in July '70 ?
