I'm going to a self serve wreckers this weekend and i want to know if i need to remove the head and flip it or just the rocker cover?

*crossed fingers*

Its on top of the Head, but of course if you find the correct you will have to take it of anyway. Make sure you undo the bolts in the correct order

Ill have to get back to you tonight. If you take it off other than the correct order you can warp or crack the head

To answer your original question, you can read the casting numbers after removing the rocker cover.

You will usually have to scrape away a bit of gunge to read them. Most Minis and related cars in wreckers have not been well maintained with regular oil changes... :(

To remove head you should do it in reverse order to torquing one down. 8)

lol...yeah well i tihnk everyone's heard things about every mini place in adelaide (r they all dodgy? or is that just normal?)

anyways...if you're looking at the engine from the front of the car it goes:
6 2 4 8
7 3 1 5 9
and make sure you undo the rockershaft bolts at the same time as the head bolt next to it (ie. when you undo the head bolts under the rocker cover (6, 2, 4, 8) do the rocker shaft ones as well)
are you heading to u-pull-it by any chance?

ha ha...nah i like morris mania.....just theres always bad stories about all the mini workshops in adelaide (i dunno why, i've never personally had any probs at any of them :? ) and they always bitch about each other WAY too much

anyway....sorry bout that had a momentary brainfaide there....you dont need to take the rocker gear off...but if you do, do it in that order (and the head bolts are the ones at the back, not the ones closer to the front of the rocker gear)

just asking about u-pull-it cos i was hoping you could keep an eye out for a honda city/civic of the right year to get the discs/calipers off to do the conversion (i rang them but they were pretty vague) yeah just let us know if you see any there

thanks dude
