Hi guys, sorry to bother you with a carby question, I know there are already lots of posts/information on carbies.
I have been trying to tune my engine however I can't seem to get it right. I have been using the idle screw on the top of the carny combined with the jet nut to try and tune it (according to what I found on google /YouTube ).
I cannot seem to get it idling correct (either idles very high or dies ). I did manage to get it idling well once, but then the accelerator didnt work (cable definitely connected but throttle arm moving didn't change the revs at all)all.

Does anyone have a good way of tuning they can share with me? I checked for a how to, but couldn't find one.

assuming this is an su carb? If the revs done increase when you apply the throttle I would think that the piston in the dash pot isn't moving.

I can't think of an easy way to check apart from removing the dash pot (3 screws) and making sure the piston isn't siezed, be careful as there is as there is a spring between the piston and the dash pot.

The throttle does work currently, it was only once when I had the idle set that it stopped working.

Richard, getting the ignition timing right is also important for good idle

Would suggest checking the vacuum advance (if fitted) is working. These can sieze up, and sometimes the diaphragm in the vacuum can can split causing leak and no vac advance. I had this problem recently and the symptom was really poor idle.

Yeah, the above guys are right. Could be a combination of several things. Not knowing the car, this is what I would do. I'm sure more knowlegible will be along soon to correct me.


1. First eliminate electrical stuff, get that out of the way then work on the carby. Check static timing, points condition dwell angle, spark plugs, condensor, coil, connections, tappet clearance, compression.
2. Check carby piston not sticking.
3. Piston spring in place.
4. Correct oil to near top of dashpot.
5. Throttle return spring strong enough.
6. Fuel mixture and fuel filter.
7. And perhaps the first thing to check, No use doing all the above if the throttle bushes are worn.

I think this can be checked by taking of the air filter and pushing the dashpot up with your finger, *cough please* LOL
