 Post subject: Tapping subframe bolts

One of my tower bolts is munted and will have to go a size up.
Would you just tap to 3/8 and bore out the body hole a tad ?
Would you do just do the one or make all of them 3/8?

I'd put a recoil/helicoil in it.

Simon,
If you want to go the drill & tap at 3/8, i have a long tap & drill bit to suit the job if the subframe is still on the car.

Weren't there subframe studs that were 3/8" to 5/16" stepped?

Be careful if drilling out the hole in the cross member, it is just a thin tube. To stop the body collapsing when bolt is tightened.

Yes that is problematic! Thanks doc . That's why I'm hesitant to go up to 3/8... not sure if any other options though..

Yes.
Drill it out to the size in the instructions (in this case 21/64") then tap it with the supplied special tap before screwing in the thread insert with the supplied tool.

There are other brands, but these Pro Thread ones are available in a lot of tool shops here in Adelaide. Cost about $30-35 for the kit that includes 4-5 inserts, and you can buy more inserts as well as different lengths.Image
