Thanks to all the help and hints, the radiator came out fairly easily. The bottom bolts to the radiator / engine mount were the hardest. The engine lifted up to a point, where something limits it.

Then there is just enough room to cajole the radiator and shroud past the fan.

Here is my problem, and the reason for all the fun....

You mean the paint job of the engine or the "paint job" the leaking water pump all over the actual paint job...

On the engine itself, they even painted the bypass hose!

Hoping it wouldn't be noticed?

They sprayed the engine assembled on the production line
so if you want originality that is correct

They didn't paint my water pump, main pulley, bypass hose etc. Pretty sure mine is still all original as it come from the factory.

This motor was refurbished around 3 years ago and didn't get used for that time. I bought it as is (a few months ago now) and to my eyes, looked good. I'm sure the colour is not right though...

One day I'll strip it down again and do a more accurate restoration but at the moment, the mini is being used for kid drop offs, soccer days and general use, so I want it reliable and usable.

I would be interested to know if the bypass hose was originally painted as per Slacko's post...

Yes original bypass hose was painted. I recently stripped a GT 9FXEY motor that had not run since 1973.

Look at old photos. You'll see even the plastic oil cap got painted. I've seen original cars with green paint still visible on the oil cap. On generator cars the generator was sprayed fitted to the motor too. I've seen an old film were you can see they used a variety of reusable covers on some areas prior to spraying.

Here's a video of making and painting mini engines (with auto transmissions). If you skip forward to 11:00 you can see everything getting painted, and the painted units on the floor too

There's an Australian film that shows similar but not quite so much already on the motor.
