To my mind...a replica Manton 1800 towmaster would be a great tribute the man and the Mini  :D

Ouch! It's been a tough issue for us and often debated - indeed Greg and I were talking about it this morning following Doug's comment. We'll see..............

When I look at this photo the Austin 1800 tow car is like 'the elephant in the room'. The Cooper S and trailer would look a little lost without it.

Doug,
I haven't rulled it out. At the moment I have enough on my plate restoring the cars I have. I do keep an eye out for an 1800 ute, but since it is not a car I would enjoy working on, I would only consider something that is in excellent condition throughout. I don't mind changing the colour, but would rather spend my time working on the minis than a land crab.

I know, I know. You are already doing a great job preserving important Mini history. But we keep getting told, "if you want something done get a busy person to do it". So I'll keep chipping away so you don't forget.

Greg, you could always make Graeme Lord an offer he can't refuse  :D [currently enjoying himself at Goodwood, Haynes etc]

Talking about Skinny...not one of his best days in the blue car :(

Funnily enough I've known the owner of this 1800 for over twenty years - he lives and works just around the corner from me. He's had the car since well before I met him and, whilst it would be an ideal car to replicate Skinny's, it is very doubtful that Russell would part with it for a reasonable price.

Coatsie, Greg -- Russell will have the Ute at the Mini Muster To-morrow as well as his race car trailer and his freshly rebuilt Moke. Have to agree re getting him to sell the Ute _ Good Luck with that. John K

Low and Blown,

What a find, what a beautiful car! Could I be so rude as to ask what sort of ball park figure such a car would cost?

Cheers

Michael

Hi Michael, Thanks for the compliments. It is a beautiful car and a credit to its previous owners. I think I paid a fair market value for the car. A Mk2 Cooper S in this sort of original unrestored condition, in great running and registered condition without any rust, matching numbers, original interior and fixings would certainly be a 35-40k car. I have always worked on the formula that a reasonable race history on a registerable car is worth double. A fantastic history by a well known driver or a factory produced car is worth triple. So as a guide I would put this cars value at around $75-$80k. This formula is something I have spoken about with another serious collector of ex Australian race cars and is the formula they price their cars by either for purchase of sale. It seems to hold up pretty well.
