I had a strange problem with mine today also. After using reverse, the gear stick just wanted to rotate (like a big spoon in a big mixing bowl, dont ask me what the guy equivalent description would be  ) but I had no idea where any of the gears were until I managed to get it out of reverse and then the gear stick went back to its normal behaviour. Was very strange.. anyone know what the problem might be?

Pudding Stirrer (sound like it  ), remote or rod change....

If its a remote, check the tightness of the splined transfer rods down the back of the engine....

Whether you are turning or not shouldn't mean much to the gearbox...are you sure it is coming from the box/diff?....I'd be looking at your wheel hubs for a brakes, bearing or CV joint/driveshaft problem.

Is it rod or remote change? Does it have a quickshift kit?

As regards the gear stick just turning around. This could be caused by one of the locating pins on the remote where the gear stick fits into being loose. In my case it was the pin on the drivers side which slots into the cut out groove on the gear stick ball which prevents it from turning.

Dad pulled apart the clutch cylinders today and is happily working on fixing the problem.
There was minor surface rust in the bottom of the master and the slave has siezed up,
as he put it. Doesn't exactly explain the air leak I could hear, but hopefully it should be
back to normal soon.
Thanks guys.

Its rod change 78 Clubby, no quickshift kit :(

I got it to do it again yesterday, seems I can stir pudding whenever its in reverse

Took mine out for its first decent drive yesterday, got a load of wood from up in the hills, no problems cept I should of raised the Hilos in the rear before I loaded it up.. wheels scaped a little over decent bumps on the way home. but no damage, just a liight scrape or 12

mine does this all the time, its the small pin that holds the rod change casing on and hold the stick in is loose, just tap it in a bit with a hammer, should fix it!

oh good, excellent :)
now if I only knew where it was I have to tap with a hammer

Would it be under the gear stick (under the car) or at the gearbox where the rod goes into the gearbox?

I had a decent look at the rod change when I had the Mini over a pit bleeding the brakes the other day.. I found a pin holding the rod in place but it wasnt loose at all, and wasnt out of position. It seemed that the problem appeared to be in the control box (?) the little box thats directly under the gearshifter.
If I pull the bottom plate off that box and have a look is there anything I have to watch for? Is it oil filled? Will I need a gasket to put it back? Are there a million little springs that might pop out when I remove the bottom plate?

Another problem today was the brake lights were staying on, including the bling bling rear LED brake light :) damn its bright! Anyway, after sussing out the brake pedal and feeling the actuator switch, found that the button that turns the brake lights on and off had slid alongside the brake pedal arm and jammed it on. I just had to push it back into its right position and was fixed. Just hope it stays fixed :)

Any help on the pudding shift reverse (rod change) would be great ;)

Jill is it only afer you pull the gear stick up?
If so take the boot off your gear stick.
Then take the cap off the selector box (push down & twist). You should be able to pull the gear stick out of the car. The pin meeni was referring to is at the front(forward most) of where the ball for gear stick sits. It's that pin that stops the gear stick from spinning, while you are there it's a good idea to check/top up the grease in there.
