if you have no motor at all to work with, go a 1275.

If you have a 998 or 1098, then work that.

A 1098 crank and pistons in a 998 block, +cam +head +carb(s) is a great start.

Pesonally, I'd stick to the 998 or 1100.... its just so rewarding to kick these big-block boys arses at the Dyno days....ok, so I'm blown, but hey... its not THAT wild........

Good luck.

YET

Personally i like small bores my 1152 is a great motor...but i'm with the doc..there ain't no substitute for cubic inches ;)

you'd be lucky to get a smallbore that ran well for 500, let alone a 1275..
the 1098 crank has harmonic problems..
the substitute for cubes is the look on the face of the guy with the 1275 when you beat him in your smallbore :D

Are we talking about road or track here?
All 3 bearing A series cranks have harmonic problems- I even busted an 850 one.. with it's pissy little 68.26mm stroke.
1098 Sprites rev pretty reliably on the track, even the small journal ones.
That extra 100cc from an 1100 crank over a 998 gives torque out of proportion to the cc increase. :P Very nice for road use.

Um... BTW that 'lil 998 turbo hasn't beat me, yet..
