Hi All,
Wondered out to the shed this morning to admire the old minis. I noticed some rust beginning to appear in the boot lid. I am planning on dipping the shell and this Got me thinking. Do I fix the rust before getting it dipped or after?

wouldn't you do the dipping 1st to reveal the full extent of the rust repairs required?

I tend to agree. I wanted to test to see if anyone out there in mini world had undertaken a similar exercise.

Do the dipping first then note where the rust is.Then undercoat the car with a 2 pack epoxy primer.NO etch primer. After the rust is done apply the 2pack epoxy primer to the repaired areas ,The body filler will adhere better to the epoxy primer than to the bare steel. You have to scuff the epoxy primer with 320 then wipe off with grease and wax remover ,then apply the body filler. The body colour can go directly over the epoxy primer. You don't need to rub underbody panels it will key in.Stay with the same brand of paint all the way through. P7676 Also don't use proofcote under the body use stone guard.

Why 2 pack epoxy primer and not etch primer?

The 2pack epoxy primer is the ultimate for adhesion and sealing the metal.You need etch if your topcoat is acrylic lacquer .Then you apply etch then one stop primer then colour.

by the way I don't like the dipping process abrasive blasting is cheaper and better Should be done by a professional then you WILL not have any panel damage

I think that’s a great plan. Would prefer to go down the blasting path because of the cost saving and the 2pack epoxy primer sounds like a great idea... I’m just struggling to find a recommended Worksop that can undertake the work here in Adelaide!!! Help!!
