Hey there

looking at importing a Classic Mini Metro Turbo Engine from the uk , was wondering if i could drop it into my Australian mini and just contact vic roads for the engine number update. Or would i need to go through the trouble of engineering the car ?

Go to Vicroads and ask "what if......". If nothing else you will have a better idea how you need to approach the authorities ;) when you actually go ahead..

Cheers, Ian

with the Metro turbo engines you would need to cut the fire-wall & fit a turbo-box , this would most-probably mean you will need an engineers report on the structure.
unles you go with one of Ben`s turbo manifolds which doesn`t need a turbo-box

I've had an engineer certify my supercharged car including the changes he wanted to see to approve it.

He said he's willing to sign off my turbo ute conversion, I'll be showing him the build progress to ensure it is to his liking.

The only turbo Minis were the ERA turbos I believe and given they were produced in 1989 and only 436 were made, I do not believe anyone would be willing to simply sign off on an engine swap in an administrative capacity.

Ie, I believe strongly that if in NSW you will need signoff by an engineer.

In terms of engine number, they have bugger all idea about which numbers should be with what, so if it's not the original block, they'd just record the engine number, ensure you own it (via receipts) and record it with that engine number. At least that's what they did in my build (1275 block in a Deluxe body).

Not sure about the rest of Australia, but as far as I know in SA there is no need to get an engineers certificate (or even advise the transport department) when adding forced induction to anything built before July 76 (ADR27A introduction), as it doesn't result in the car no longer meeting any actual requirements/ADRs etc.

Wow really. Damn that's easy! You'd be defected in NSW.

Since it is somewhat relevant to this thread...my friend just took his turbo Celica for a blue slip today (getting it back on the road after about 15 years). It had already been engineered back then. The Blue slip got knocked back as the intercooler wasn't mentioned on the engineer's report.

So back to the engineer to get that mentioned on the report before it can be registered. Even an intercooler is an issue here, let alone adding a turbo without certification!
