Don't get me wrong. 1310 or 1380 is the way I want to go, but I know the 1098s were torquier because of a longer stroke.

Here's the plan so far. Lighten and balance the components, crankshaft wedged, buy a lightened flywheel (not the ultralight - I think I do need some weight there). Will fit high lift rockers, belt drive, electronic ignition. I just need advice of the best way to go for torque not being a mechanic.

1098s have good torque, but nothing like what a 1275 or bigger has. The stroke of a 1098 is .096" longer than a 1275, but the bore is a good 6mm less.

To put it in perspective-
Stock Mini 1098 had 60 lb/ft torque

1275 LS, 1100S etc (single carb) had 69 lb/ft torque

1275 Cooper S (twin carb) had 79 lb/ft torque

1380 S I did last Xmas, with a 286 cam and 45 Weber had 106 lb/ft torque on Russell Engineerings engine dyno (measured at crank).

So. I agree with 9YaTaH- 1098 is good, but there's no replacement for displacement!
