So i think that Vivian may be pinging.. im not sure what
it sounds like, but she doesnt sound right. she feels flat, very flat
has for a fair while. hills make her squirm badly. im thinking it has
something to do with the timing. but atm, she is not overheating
or anything so im scared to touch if its nothing.

under load or when the revs get up a bit she makes this sort of well not
clicking, but hard to describe. i think it may be pinging, im using all the right
fuels and addatives (bp ultimate/mobile high octane/caltex vortex NO SHELL)

sounds like a kinda slow rattle, high pitched metallic tap. If it's pinging, it'll do it under load up hills... drive up a hill, if it does it, mark the distributor position, turn the distributor a tiny bit anti-clockwise (retarding the ign. timing) and drive up again, if it doesn't do it or does it less, then you know...

pinging can sound like the noise you get when you vigorously shake up a spray can, but much duller than that.

You hear a lot of older FWD Jap cars (80's Laser) doing it. Can be caused by bad fuel too (low octane)!

What fuel are you running?

a man of experience on the forums Anton, i would have expected you to read
my whole post throughly     either BP ultimate, Mobile (the 98octane one)
or Caltex Vortex.

By the description i think it is piningn for sure. but it seems pretty big time stuff, soi i reckon its the timing, will go out now and check (damn, everythime i think i can start studying there is something funner to distract me  :D thanks

well i just had a play around with the timing. retarding it (going anti clockwise)
did not so much at all. But i advanced it a little bit and the performance gain
is amaxzing. no longer flat and turning mountains into molehills.
only thing now is i hope its not going to start runnign hot
fingers crossed!!

advancing makes the cylinders fire a little earlier.
which means as the piston comes up
it fires before it gets to the top
which isnt very good
and you can burn holes through valves

firing = pushing down
piston movement = going up
they work opposingly

thats if youve advanced it TOO much.

dont know if it was already retarded
i say tighten it up
give it a drive, and if its ok
then ok

well considering how crap it was driving before (really flat)
and know it has power back, i think it must have been retarded.
we didnt advance it a whole lot. but you can feel the difference.

thanks pepole
