I need to examine the speedo drive in my automatic box.

Does the gear box need to be empty before pulling the drive out.

TIA John K.

Thanks Simon.

I left out the most relevant word. Oil.

Gearbox and engine are still in the car - Speedo drive cable is not spinning at all and am hoping that the fault is the drive pinion.

Not keen on pulling it out and apart just for the speedo as everything else is working properly.

So the question should have been - Does the gearbox need to be empty of oil before removing the speedo drive pinion?

Regards John K.

The spindle seems to sit around 6 inches above the bottom of the case .
I would say oil loss would be minimal if at all

Thanks Simon.

I bit the bullet and pulled it - No oil lost at all.

All good now after the usual ordeal getting the cable nut to restart.
