umm I added a Mini tacho from a wreck, managed to get it working, but same problem - the light doesnt work. Im wondering if I can just place a globe in the hole in the back or is there a globe somewhere in it that I can replace/wire up? After removing my old tacho I have a spare wire that was the light source to the old tacho, so I have the wire ready to plug into the new tacho/light, I just dont know where I can plug it...
Can anyone explain where exactly the globe is positioned so I can either add or replace it? Thanks guys, this is the back of the tacho I got working

There is an earth lead needed. It earths from the spade terminal on the back of the tacho back to the PCB behind the main cluster. On looking at your photo the red lead is connected to it. if this is a power lead it might tend to fry things.

The red IS the power... the blue backing is the earth isn't it?! along with the power to the lights.

You may be right. Mine has a brown lead on it and the way it is connected to the PC I presumed it was earth. I presumed the power for the globe came off the PC at the globe holder. Why would they run power external to the PC? The globe definitely picks up power from the PC, the PC goes under a screw right next to that spade terminal (power for the instrument???) and the external wire goes from the spade to a screw and then onto the PC behind the temp/fuel cluster. On the PC that then goes straight to the multi pin plug. I would reckon its an earth but don't take my word for it get some power onto the cluster and check things out. I have no way of doing that at the moment.

My spare gauge has a brown wire coming off it

It may need more power than the PC can handle?! I worked out it was power due to the 5" one I had got it's power from that screw behind the temp/fuel gauge and of course my smiths tacho wouldn't work 'til I connected the power wire to the spade bit it from the screw :)

Interesting. Have you actually put a meter on it? I Have never had mine in a car. It was not an earth that made the Smiths work and you presumed it was power? Another thing on mine is that none of this has insulators on it. The spade is just a bare terminal.

No

Yep... there was no other earth connected to the back of the gauges so I guessed the earth came from the big plug and through the PC

Neither does my spare

thanks guys.. I couldnt see any globe in there, but will have a better look tomorrow... if there is no globe in there, can I pull a globe and housing out of something else and put in in the hole? As long as its very low power/heat..? Any ideas what I could use? Can I buy the globe and housings?
