G'day,
I'm finishing up the assembly of my front hubs and would like to check if I've got things right about the inner seal. My hubs are standard drum brake ones off a 1963 850. I've fitted a set of Timken bearings following the Doc's guidelines in the "how to" section and all good so far (torqued up and adjusted as required without seals). Now I'm up to the part where I'm installing the seals and have a question about the depth I need to press the inner seal into the hub.

In the attached pic, you can see I've installed the spacer that came with the kit. It's sitting hard up against the cup and the distance between the spacer and the end of the hub (the shiny part of the hub where the seal goes) is about 11.5mm. The seal itself is about 8mm thick. There's also a white plastic bit that fits onto the lip of the seal and that's about 1mm thick.

I seem to recall reading on here that the seal itself should be pressed in so that the edge of the seal is just below the edge of the hub but I'm thinking if that's the case, then with a distance of say 11.5mm between the spacer and the edge of the hub, if I press the seal to say 1mm below the edge then there would still be a gap of around 2.5mm between the spacer and the seal. If that's the case, what's the point of the spacer?

If I press the seal hard up against the spacer, then the seal itself would sit about 3.5mm inside the hub and the white plastic bit would be say 2.5mm inside the hub. When I pulled the original ball bearings out of the hub, the inner seal was just about flush with the inside the hub.

So before I go any further, I thought I'd better check what I need to do.

The drum brake hubs had about a 2.4mm seal spacer.
Disc brake ones were about 4.7mm I think.
If you have any drum ones fit 2.
If not fit the inner seal so it's about flush with the edge of the machining.
Re the white plastic bit that's a UK thing to help keep road slush out.
You can use it or toss it.
Oz cars had a normal outer seal in there.

You will probably find also the white dust seal will not fit over your CV shaft/face with drum brakes as these are designed for cars with discs.
Having recently fitted tapered bearings to the front hubs of my 850, I also found that the supplied split pin for the hub nut was too thick.

I kept all the old stuff I pulled off so I'll dig them out tomorrow and check out the spacers.

You're right about the white plastic bit. I was going to ask about that as well. I can get it over the CV shaft but it's a tight fit. Once on, it does slide ok. If I used it, I was thinking of sliding it onto the CV shaft by about 10mm which would leave a bare shaft for the seal to start sliding onto. I was thinking that when I pushed the shaft all the way home, the plastic bit would be pushed along by the seal. Given it's a tight fit on the shaft, it will spin with the shaft and wear against the lip of the seal. Possibly not a good thing but maybe no drama.

Would that work or will I bin it?

I would leave it off. We don't have snow and salt on our roads.
They are only in the kit because it's UK/European.

If you go buy seals only from KC or other local suppliers you usually get the standard, outer ones. Which fit and work fine.
