The new boot rubber i have will not compress into old shape.
Are there two different rubbers?
It is on a Mk1 and the rubber requires a lot of pressure to shut the boot, will it compress with time?

By boot rubber, do you mean the rubber seal for the boot lid? How is it you not compressing into the old shape?

people who have put new rubbers on their boots have needed two people to close it.
i can imagine how much pressure is dumped on the hinges so have resisted getting new rubbers

Dude, I put a new original boot rubber in my clubby (well I put new EVERYTHING in really) and it took me about 1/2 an hour to close it! :shock:

The secret is....close it and leave it for a few weeks. Then the rubber will compress a bit and conform to the shape!

When I put my new boot rubber on with its 26 clips I sprayed it with rubber condition bought from rare spares. This has two advantages. It softens the rubber and also shows the contact area of the seal lip on the body. In two places , near the wire restraints, I had to dress out the lip for good contact (hammer and a small block , rag for protection). Seeing the contact area allows you to align lip near the middle of the seal. I reguarly spray the sealing rubbers and the boot has become easier to close.

Why don't you put the seal in some preety hot water for a while till the seal gets abit softer and then put it on or you could even get the hairdryer and put that on there to heat it up a bit and then close it, it will then mould better to the shape of you boot.

Bought from Auto one? rear spares Beverly Hills. Brand is CPR Rubber Magic, $21.95 a spray can 400g. Seems dear but seals arn't cheep and is good for new and old. Made my original flipper window seal soft as new. Had used slipicone before but this is silicone free and supposedly not harmful to paint or chrome. Distributed by Rare Spares Pty Ltd.

This stuff sounds good.

Might have to get myself a tin... mine has the same two places where its not sealing as well.

I just dressed these lips ( hit them with medium hammer) out to contact the seal. I figured it would stop the dust from being sucked into the boot area. Not worried about water . It does'nt rain in NSW any more !!

Haha tell me about it.
Yeah mine doesnt let anything in, its just that the lines in these areas arent as deep as the ones in the other places of the seal.
