Pre 1971 police cars had the blanking plate fitted like all the standard cars however they did drill a hole in them for extra wiring to pass through.

Do you know if that was plugged on the police vehicles?

Wiring for the siren, driving lights and tacho (SPO41 cars only) went through holes in the firewall and cover plate, and then calked with window putty type material (removed in the image below).

Thanks guys for the photo and link to the blanking plate. I assume the plate was fitted and then painted with the rest of the body at the same time? Is that a sheet metal screw holding the plate in? Reason I ask is that it is almost time to paint my body so if the plate is there when painting it would make it easier.

Fairly amateurish quick install

The caulking/putty was probably Henley's...similar to...

Green Henley General Purpose Mastic Compound
Designed as a general purpose non-hardening, water resistant mastic void filler. Green Henley Mastic Compound is especially suitable for electrical installation work with rubber or polyethylene cables where it may be necessary to protect parts from moisture or fumes.

Yes self tappers...I think the plate would have been painted (black) separately and fitted along the production line in lieu of heater/fresh air blower...

I agree. The stuff I pulled out, well it actually just fell out, was hard and like very old general glazing putty. No rubber grommets or longer term option used. Whatever could be done quickly on the BMC assembly line or at the NSW Government Motor Garage where the siren and other bits were fitted.

Hello Ausmini forum members!

It's been a long time. Covid, moving house, new puppy and a herniated disc in my back put this project on hold for a while. But now the project continues!

Since the last post, the body has been painted, the subframes were powdercoated and installed on the car and the suspension installed so that we now have a rolling vehicle making it easier to move around. I just received a box from Scott's Old Auto Rubber for all the rubber seals for the car, I have a box on the way from VIN Wire with a new harness (the old one was hacked up) that is supposed to be NSW police spec. The engine and transmission have both been rebuilt and mated to each other but are not in the car yet. The next thing I need help with is the roof liner.

I know Newton Commercial sells an Australian Mk 1 headlining kit in four different colors. I also know Minisport Australia sells a roof liner in Australian grey. Anyone know what was in the NSW police cars? Anyone have a preference between the Newton and Minisport versions? Thanks in advance and looking forward to finishing this thing!

The headlining was no different in Police spec cars.

Original headlining material has been NLA for some time. You could go for the Newton Commercial if you are not fussed about originality, or wait to see if the purchase of the more original headlining in this thread comes to fruition.

Here is a photo of my original hoodlining compared to a Newton Commercial pattern.

Hoodlining Newton and original.jpg

There is a small section of the original under the rearview mirror mount showing. Colours are a bit inaccurate but the original is a very light grey. The Newton version is their White. They have a grey which might be closer than white but I have another mini with their white and I'm very happy with it. Newton pattern isn't the same.

You guys are awesome! After I made my post I saw the new thread on the roof liner. It's almost as if you guys read my mind!

I do have a couple of questions.

Newton sells the roof liner in four different colors. Were all Australian Minis done with the grey or were there color options at the time?

It looks like this roof liner sold by Minisport - https://minisport.com.au/mini-sedan-roo ... alian-grey - is very close to the Type 1 roof liner listed in the aforementioned thread. Do people consider this a good substitute for the early cars? Or is the quality of this roof liner sub-par?

Without knowing for certain when the change was made from Type 1 to Type 2, seems the most logical thing in the short term is to get the Mini Sport grey version unless I'm missing something. Thanks!

And unfortunately because my car had been painted along the way including the interior, the roof liner was replaced with something that didn't belong as shown in the pic. So sadly I have no info to contribute to help determine when the changeover to Type 2 happened.

It appears Minisport don't do the rear parcel tray board.

Your 1970 mini would have had the type 2 pattern. I have a 1969 mini with the same pattern & colour as my 1970 S.
You might have to wait for someone to buy the minisport one and compare to the original. It is hopeless trying to compare colours on digital screens.

I'm not sure about cooperess' comment about the rear parcel board and if you wanted that too.

Mine is an early Mk 2 Cooper S which was manufactured in Sep of 1969 so I don't know if it had the type 2 pattern for certain by that point (at least according to winabbey's thread.) I'm curious to know when your 1969 was manufactured with the type 2 pattern. If someone wants to say for certain that the type 2 pattern was in production by Sep 1969 then I'd be in for a roof liner whenever it was manufactured. The minisport roof liner may not be the exact color but the pattern looks to be very close...
