Good question, not sure if it is in the drawing winabby supplied above, can’t quite make it out. I just took enough paint from the hole that the plastic holder went in snug, but not so snug it closed up any.

Yep - it's blurry my end too.
I'm fitting (drilling prior to paint) the 3 holes for the bonnet ring found on the MK2 S.. I don't actually have the 3 plastic sockets, I can measure the pins easily enough, but the holes need to be snug enough to fit the plastic bits, but also firm enough for the die cast pins to locate as well .

Im sure someone has the correct factory size. But since i have a spare plastic insert i measured it out of interest. I'm going to say 3/16.

FWIW, I measured my plastic inserts also and they were 4.73-4.74mm as above (12 of). A 3/16 (4.76mm) drill wont go through the holes in my original bonnet/boot easily (could force it /probably paint - most likely size). A 4.5 mm drill is "slightly" loose in the holes. The lugs on my front/rear badges vary from 3.08mm to 3.22mm (2 front badge surrounds, 3 rear badges).

I have a copy of a drawing that shows the badge hole diameter is 0.140 to 0.145”, 9/64” fits in between the limits. Approx 3.6 mm.
That will likely be the hole size as body in white, some e-coat and paint film will make this smaller again.

Paul.

Yes, my New Old Stock Morris Cooper boot badges do have a slight bend to match the boot profile - very subtle though, unless you lay them face down on a perfectly flat surface like I did.

Yes, they were made like that to match the boot lid curve.

My NOS Badge fixes are exactly 3/16" in diameter.

The holes on my Mk2 bonnet and bootlid are 11/64inch. The new drill bit just shaves a light cut of excess paint from the holes.

I am glad you have learnt so much. That is the great thing about this forum. It caters for all especially people like you. You don't need to be scared to fit things to your car - just ask the question if you are stuck.

Obviously gto you are not a problem solver, but that is ok they still have not resolved the problem of fitting the badges, maybe you should try and work it out but then again you are not a problem solver and you may get stumped.

Allen - Clearly your previous post and this one is a bit of tongue in cheek sarcasm, and I for one don't mind some humour, although some may not get it. You have been generous in the past by passing on your knowledge of body work and painting that I'm sure has helped other members.

You say "... they have still not resolved the problem of fitting badges". If you can assist the original poster who is clearly trying to restore his car and avoid mishaps then please describe how you would tackle the issue.

I thought I answered the original question with a simple and straight forward reply at the start.

As it happens some other people like to ask more questions or add more info to the discussion or start a similar topic related to badges and badge placement.
