Hey Clip, I gather they're not what you were hoping for. I am considering getting the carpet ones from the same supplier so any constructive info about them would be appreciated.

Is the fit just no good or need too much fiddling around to get them to fit ok?

Rocky

Fitting seemed ok as it’s just the flat front and rear floor sections with a very slight moulded hump for the centre tunnel. Problem was no seperate pieces for the front wheel arch sections and for some reason they only edged the back cut. So just a raw edge around where the floor meets the wheel arches. Maybe there would have been enough off cut from the rear section to do the wheel arches, but it would have been my raw cuts mating up somehow to the floor section, which I’m sure would have ended up being pretty shabby.

Getting rid of the new ones Tim - just another $300 down the shoot! Apart from what I mentioned in last post, the grey doesn’t work with the rest of the black interior. Don’t know why I thought it would! Did you want them?

Thought I'd check in to see if there has been any progress made on rubber/vinyl flooring options for the Morris 850, seeing now three years have passed.

Has anyone had any experience with the All Car Carpets mats, or any other manufacturer? (a company Car Mats Direct lists vinyl, but I haven't had any experience with them)

I'm seeking a front mat for a Morris Mini Minor (essentially a late 850) to match the rest of the original black mats. It just doesn't look right with carpet in the front!

Thanks,
Evan

In mid 1972, Dunlop advised the company that they were getting out of the rubber mat business. It got to the point where the cost of rubber mats was greater than carpet. The issue was complicated further by the introduction of the rod change gearbox in 1973. While the drawings of the original rubber mats (and also the later laminated type) survive, for these to be made, a significant investment in a mould would be required - far greater in detail than that used for pressing out carpet shapes. Even then, for the pattern, the drawing says to refer to a sample provided by the factory - the drawings only giving the dimensions and position of holes and canvas supports. It would be great if someone could do it, but a business case would be hard to justify. Interestingly, even though carpets became cheaper to purchase than the mats, the company increased the price of the car on the basis that carpets were more luxurious and thus a higher retail price would be justified.

Thanks for the insight Tony, great to hear about the background to the mats. Fascinating that the drawings survive.

Funny how carpets were cheaper to make but could be charged at a premium!

For the case of my car, I'd be happy just with a general mould of patterned rubber, without the need for a heel pad etc. It would great to see a photo of one of the modern reproductions fitted to a car if anyone has one?
