Thisevening i was reinstalling my windscreen after replacing my headling with the aid of anto. It was almost completely in and i pushed it little to hard in the wrong spot and crack. Luckily it wasnt the best windcreen around and i have 2-3 spare.
What is the best method to fit a windscreen in a brand new seal?
I place one side in the seal and push it into bottom side of the windscreen, work along to the other side and then push the top in. (this worked on older seals)

I use the same method, never broke one. use plenty of dish soap, and make sure it's central before pushing the top part in.
Hard part is that bloody filler strip...

Memo to Chris and Anto

In the club we have things called "Tech Days" (they don't have to be 24 hours long )

You organise a tech day (in this case) by ringing a known windscreen guru such as Richard P. Alternatively, next Wednesday you ask at the meeting if some nice people who have done screens before could pop around to your place.

Thats what I would be doing - waiting times in Casualty are very long these days!!

Definitely the best way to fit windscreens in rubber seals is to work the bottom two corners in first and along the bottom then up the sides. And as Doc said, make sure ya have HEAPS of slippy stuff on, it wont be a concern once you've filled the seal with Dmastic.

Yeah, just making sure there wasnt anything i was doing really wrong... ill see how i go tomorrow Mick. Ill probably be getting Richard to help fit the locking strip. Ill call a tech day if i make another 2 piece windcreen. (i have done rears about 3-4 times and front once before)

It was a laminated job, and the laminate was failing so it is no great loss. I found that a mate at a windscreen shop installs them in about 5 minutes but NOOOO, Chris has to do it the hard way! More of that 'rubber lubricant' and some beer and it will go in nicely...

Oh and BTW, have you actually got the headliner all the way in yet? I'm just looking forward to getting the rear screen in

As to the chrome filler strip around your windscreen, I forgot to mention something.

When ya fit the filler strip, make sure ya push the strip back into the corners so when it meetsit butts up hard. The strip has a realllllly annoying habit of shrinking real bad

Isnt it illegal to drive a car with no windscreen anto . If only my car could teleport to the windscreen guy.
I got the original window in successfully (the one that was in it when i bought it) but it seems a little smaller (4-5 mm from the inside face of the seal under the groove). Or is this normal? My car is a Leyland Mini S

All Oz Minis have the same size front & rear screens. MK1 sizes. But, there are glass manufacturing tolerances- 2 or 3 mm would be normal variation, but not much more.

I had trouble with my rear one- I found later the car has had a rear hit sometime past.
LH side of body is a little distorted. One rear screen I had fitted, but not another.

I had 2 clubman screens and they were both different sizes, about 4mm difference between them at all 4 sides.
As they say; "No two minis are the same"

Will the locking strip seal everything up or will i have to take it out and use sealant... im not keen on sealant because i spent ages cleaning it all off, a mix 3-4 different types used in the past by previous people... no wonder it leaked!

[edit] seal is brand new one piece item (well they cheat and bind it, but built for a mini) and glass is spotlessly clean on sealing surfaces

So I was breaking the law when I drove my Holden one ton van from Cooma to Canberra one year with big Elvis sunnies to protect my eyes and picking broken glass out of my hair all the way??

If you drivewithout the front, keep all the windows UP or CLOSED, and keep your speed DOWN (sets up a little pressure "buffer" in the car)

I went for a drive around the block with no glass bar the door windows. You can really hear the induction noise from the weber! and the exhaust, plus your face goes numb at 60km/h. After doing this i realise my rego sticker was on the rear side window... woops oh well.

This is a bit off topic but my dad had an old 1940's Commer truck for a resto project.. that never happened. The windscreen on it tilted in the frame thats 1940's aircon for you.

To seal the windscreen effectively:

Place your seal in the car, with a couple of bits of masking tape to hold the top up.
Work your windscreen in using lots of glass cleaner, slippy stuff. Starting with the bottom edge and corners, then up the sides, and pull yer masking tape out, as ya come along the top.

While your winscreen is sitting in the seal without the filler strip, run your caulking gun of Selleys Dmastic around. Between the glass and the seal, and between the body and the seal. Best way to make sure you have enough is to pump it in till it squeezes out.

Do a rough wipe up of the excess sealant.
Fit your filler strip, again using plenty of slippy stuff. Make sure that you work it back into the corners to allow for shrinkage.
This will squeeze more goo out. With the handle of a screwdriver or something, run it along the seal, while pressing down to squeeze the little bit of extra Dmastic out. If ya dont it's gonna squeeze out anyway once ya start driving it.

Clean up all the excess Dmastic with kerosene, then go over it all with good quality glass cleaner.

Stand back, and check out yer nice shiny windscreen.
