Well... I finally got to go look at this mini today... I was not very impressed.

It was being advertised as a Clubman GT. I think the owner thought it was one.

I had come armed with my list of body and engine prefixes and using it I confirmed suspicions that it was in fact just an everyday run of the mill mini.

The body number started with 022X2S4M09 and the engine number started with 99H889AJ.

Now the seller said that they had the engine rebuilt at a cost of about 3 grand or more... he said that it was a 1275cc engine. The engine code indicates that it isn't 1275 but instead 998. I don't know what the go is there... either this guy didn't get it rebuilt himself and had bought it thinking it was 1275cc... or the engine rebuilder guy has ****ed them in the arse... or he's lying... or it's a dodgy number (it looked genuine thought).

Also, I peered through the wheel spokes and spied the crappy drum brakes on the front. Apparently not legal if it does have the bigger engine.

On top of all that there were bubbly patches of paint everywhere. I haven't seen many minis and thus don't know how much rust to expect but this had little patches everywhere. Give it a year or two and there'd be RWC problems.

On the plus side though, it's roadworthy now, it did have the twin tanks, the interior was cool and it had been deseamed which also looked cool.

It's not what I expected for $5500 :?

it looks like a very nice car, but if you werent impressed dont do it, the rust will pnly cause you troubles. on the other hand, dont all minis have a bit of rust somewhere???

if the engine number says its a 998, what is the max it could be bored out to? what would be the volume if it had been bored to the max? (60 thou yeah???) surely not to 1275!!!

Well it sure is shiny... but that's in between the bubbled patches of paint. It has been resprayed at some stage. It doesn't appear to have been de-rusted though.

I would assume that to bore out a 998cc engine to 1275 you'd have to bore through the waterjackets. Unless they all used the same block and the smaller engines were sleeved? I don't know.

Anyway... it was on the top end of my price range and I really don't want drums and the smallest engine for that kinda money. I'll keep looking.

Nope you can't get a 998 to 1275 by boring...
Practical limit is 1220cc, that's with a 1098 crank put in and bored to 68mm for Imp pistons.

Hi,

The Clubman GT (Aus model) was only produced and sold 1972 -73 - the UK 1275GT lasted until about 1980ish. It was a replacement for the Mk II Cooper S when production of that car ceased. Roughly 1000 of them were made and a fair number were shipped here to NZ where they were a v good seller. Numbers unknown, but a contact here in the mag trade reckons half of them came here - they are now v hard to find in either country.

They were not produced in 1976 - you are looking at a replica. check the ID plate in the engine bay - model code for the GT is YG2S8 with 3 or 4 numbers following.

The early cars (exact number unknown) had the genuine Cooper S block with an engine number begiining 1200/XXXX. The later cars used an 1100S block with engine number 1206/XXXX.

Price wise, they are certainly worth more than $1900! They would be starting to fetch up to $10k probably - there is one for sale here atm with an asking price of $15k. Try and track down Bob Ward from MOCQ - he has one and can probably help.

They are not the original decals on this car. Have a look at my web site - it might give you a few tips and there is a copy of a very good article by Stephen Dalton about identifiying GT's.

Good luck in your search.

Gavin

Hi Gavin,

Love your website mate. Awsome. I sent you an email the other day asking some questions about build dates etc. which have been answered on this thread. Thanks.

So did ALL gen aussie Clubman GT's have the cooper S running gear? Also I read something somewhere about it having a "GT" gearstick knob. Sounds cool. Which steering wheel came as standard in the GT - was it the cooper S padded type? Would LOVE to see some interior pics of a GT if you have any.
