Ok this is the first job that needs doing on the clubbie. It's dripping tiny amounts of oil from underneath where the gear rod goes into the engine. I've taken this pic from an angle and admittedly it's not the best. Haven't got around to putting the clubbie up on stands yet (tommorow) otherwise i'd make it a lot clearer. Stupid sunny day is ruining the camera brightness compensation.

Anyway, i'm guessing I need a new Oil seal - g/box - selector shaft - mini (rod change)?

Now if that's correct, after removing the gear change assembly from the body (no hassles there right? just follow the manual) does the selector rod just come out of the engine? What's the go there?

Is is as simple as unbolting the gear change assembly, pulling the rod out, fitting new seal and putting it all back together or is there a mechanism holding the selector rod inplace to whatever it's plugged into in the engine gearbox?

Just left of your arrow you will see a spline, with in it you will find two pins one at each end. Know one of them out and hey pesto. Once you get a new seal. Don't take the old one out. Just put the new one in over the top. It shouldn't leak anymore.

Cheers

Aaron

There is a kit that you can buy from MiniSpares in the UK but I wouldn't bother.

Drain your oil, undo the linkage, pry out the old seal and whack a new one in. Now with a suitable pipe over the shaft push it right in. Now there is room for a second (you can only fit two) seal. Damn silly idea to have such a seal below the oil level anyway.

Tip for removing oil seals....

Screw a self tapping screw into the seal and it will give something to grip on. (Be carefull to avoid any damage. 8) )

On a standard Oz Clubbie rodchange box, there's room for 4.... I checked Anton's while it was apart. 8)

Good luck. My new seal ontop of an old seal lasted all of 6 months before it started leaking again. Don't bother about the mini spares kit with the bellows thing, it turns to dust in less time.

The only solution to this problem is to change to a remote change gearbox

You could use an 850 one, magic wand....
Ah, the memories of my youth... thrashing a poor twin carb 850... until the crank broke!

Trying to get the pins out on the spline (mine only feels like it has one at the bottom).

Am I pushing or pulling? Manual says to hit it out with a suitable sized punch and hammer, so I'm guessing i'm pushing the pin in... only that doesn't make sense (I thought i'd have to pull it out to remove the rod??).

Shard

edit: ack just tried hitting it with the punch and it made the pin hole grow like it's going to split :? How does this thing come out without damaging it?

Put the car in reverse, use a pin punch to push the pin out the other side. Once the pin it out you can take disconnect the rod from the housing.

[EDIT] It's usually a tight fit, so you need to use a BFH and some dexterity. One pin will come out in neutral but the other will come out only in reverse (due to the angle of the pin).

While you are under there, replace the pins with new ones, costs under $3 for both from memory. Worth it for the hassle if you ask me

The pin bit is sticking out from the bottom, am I supposed to tap it out from the hole side? I can't rotate the rod around to get a punch in there let alone a hammer??

No, tap it through until it comes out the other side (the side closest to the car). You're not supposed to pull it out, if there is enough to grab onto you might be able to do it, but let me tell you, it's a TIGHT fit, you usually need a BFH and alot of effort to put it in let alone get it out... unless you're superman 8)

If i were you, don't try to grab it, you will squeeze and warp the pin and make it impossible to drive it through the pin housing...

hmm my pin must be too big, it was warping the pin as I was hitting it rather then pushing it through :/
