OK, a bit embarrassing but here goes:

I took the bonnet catch off to install a internal release kit. When this wasn't going to suit, I wanted to put the original catch back on. Being silly I stripped back the parts and painted them, and never quite paid attention to how it all goes back together.

I've been through the manuals and none seem to have this in detail?

Any help?

Matt

Amatures!

I admit that it is a very difficult task at best, I took mine apart and managed to put it back together but now that I think about it I have no idea how I managed that  All I remember is that it wasn't easy...

OK,

I know basically how everything goes together, I just need to know which way around the plate that goes in the middle goes???  It is the one that is on top of the catch plate that moves.

Anyone with photos?

Thanks
matt

Oh yeah I remember now, that's is the hardest part, the middle latch plate thingy all while trying to keep the spring on and screw on the nuts to hold it down.

Try it in all directions, there should only be 4 ways to do it, left, right, unsidedown left, unsidedown right. From memory they all fit, however the bonnet catch will only close when it is in the right way...

Sorry can't be of much more help... I'll take pics tonight for you if you are still stuck.

Looks all there. The view of the latch handle you've shown is looking forward from drivers seat.
The little spring goes on the left of it as viewed, and pulls it back, towards the radiator.

I'm an expert at this - I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the bonnet catch on my cooper, I had these 2 wierd spacer things left over after I put everything together, turned out they were the missing piece of the catch puzzle (item 3 below) .... here's an exploded pic and how it fits together - this pic is looking at the whole assembly as if you're looking down at it from the front of the car. I went and pulled it off the deluxe I'm working on, so it's very grubby

Image

Item 4 is the only part that's outside the body - note the green circle showing the sloped cutaway parts, they go towards the front, more aerodynamic....

Item 2 goes directly underneath, and the spacers (Item 3) go through the slotted holes, allowing it to slide from side to side

the bolts go through the spacers (item 3) and into the plate with the captive nuts (item 1) which goes inbetween item 2's main body and the bendy bit

I've pictured Item 1 upside down, to show which way the bit that sticks out goes - it goes on the passenger side, when assembled on the car, the nuts should be at the bottom

Finally, the spring (item 5 - shock!) goes in the little hole and on to the bonnet slam panel on the passenger side

enjoy!

(edit) the blue lines show where the bolts go, the purple line is supposed to show the bottom plate going into it's spot... the big black circled bit is supposed to be outside the car

Thats all very good. But mine doesn't slide properly when i put it in. How do we fix it so it slides? My guess is the spacers aren't right hence sticking when you tighten them up. Why would this be if it was right when it came off the first time. Thickness of the paint is the only thing i can think of.

Cheers

Aaron

good point Aaron, I needed a couple of washers along with the spacers, forgot about those... just find some flat washers the same inner and outer diameter and you'll be right

chances are there wasn't any paint on the various bits of metal that touch each-other, now they've got some sticky stuff on them they're not sliding
