Best Mini starter I've seen is the one in Josh's (Mini Mad's). It's a pre-engaged one (NOT Lucas) sold by Heritage MG. No filing of holes, it suits early Mini flywheels & bolts straight in.
Spins like a Honda one...
~$165.

Pre-engaged starters start better. I got told very simply that they get into gear, then spin... as opposed to the "slam drive" lucas ones which spin then slam into gear. They also don't stop turning over until the engine kicks in. Also sounds better.... 8) The Gemini ones are pre-engaged.

I'll go out on a limb and say pretty well any gemini starter will work. The ones I was told fit were the earlier two models (ie the very first rounded shape, and the later boxy TE, TF). The one I got was from the TE, TF type which were the early 80's model. Around 85,86 ish they changed to a front wheel drive format(?) with a more rounded shape, european shape, not sure if this model fits but probably worth a look.

There's more of the boxy TE, TF shape anyhow so aim for one of those and you should be right.
