makka that's an early model (accessory) thermo housing...
They made them for 850s and MM1000s etc that didn't have a sender hole in the head. 8)

Air emissions crap.

Load of SHITE!

You're supposed to have an air pump mounted on your thermostat housing thing too... see the two holes.
Yeah.

Emissions back then were not grams per mile or whatever, but were rated on % CO etc in the exhaust. Some bright spark found if you pump air into the exhaust, it dilutes it and gives a lower reading. So.... they bunged an air pump on. It bolted onto the front of the thermostat housing. Takes a few HP to drive it. Can't get parts for it now anyhow.
Most people fling all that pipe plumbing too, and fit a 7/16"UNF grub screw into each of the 4 holes in the front of the head.
 These screws are expensive- so make some grubscrews out of old seatbelt bolts (same thread).

lose ALL those pipes at the front of the motor and plug the 4 holes in the head.

The air pump attaches onto the thermostat housing and has a fan belt driving it.

Here is a VERY old pic of JAM's motor. Note the pump and its position.
