SA Laws state that any car must not produce visible emissions for more than 10 seconds.

What are other states like?

Same. But they ignore Toyota diesel Hiluxes etc that do it ALL the time.
Dirty, dirty things... bleccch!
Surely if others can make non-sooty diesels, so can Toyota!

Diesel vehicles (usually 4x4's and trucks) drive me crazy, the way they belch out smoke...... :x

How can that not contribute to 'smog' pollution that you see on the horizon nearly every day? No wonder our weather is FOOKED.

The crap that diesels pump out is significantly more visible, and does make a greater contribution to our smog. However my understanding is that diesels pump out less carbon dioxide ( i.e. green house gas) than their petrol equivalents and due to also being more economical are therefore are more environmentally friendly.

BTW, in NSW the EPA encourages people to report smoky vehicles. IMO I'm sure that this service is only for reporting Sigmas, Magnas, and Lasers, and that nobody with a heart would report a Mini :) .

When getting a pink slip in NSW, do they still do an emissions test? Has anybody recently failed this and needed a tune up?

One of the problems with the Toyotas(is it specific to toyotas :?:) is that Australian diesel is C$@P and the cars are built to perform on better diesel the problem also gets worse with altitude (so does fuel consumption predictably enough).

Dad was a toyota mechanic and had been called to various cases involving the EPA. Usually to say that this is a problem with Australian diesel and the car's designed to work on better grade fuel and not as a result of the owners failure to maintain thier vechile properly. And as they have already passed ADRs....

Mind you there is something badly wrong with quite a few diesels and it is probably over looked with "well diesels do that"

Ah.... yes...... now I understand.

You are hoping that your car was creating enough smoke to cover up the numberplate from the speed camera............ But if it didnt totally obscure your numberplate, you are worried that they will see all the smoke in the photo and defect your mini for emissions

Gotcha
