G'day guys,

I have been a long time reader of this site but have kept posting down to a minium, as my knowlege is very limited (as will be explained by the remainder of my post).

I bought my first ever mini yesterday afternoon (78 Clubman - I think) - will post links to pics tonight - and I have a few problems already.

It runs really rough and stalls when I slow down/stop (I am planning on changing the leads this afternoon after reading a thread about this topic), I'll also grab some carby cleaning spray and hit the engine with that.

The main problem I have though, is that when I flicked on the windsrcreen wiper switch they (wipers) worked, then I switched them off, then back on again and they got stuck in the middle of the windscreen. I turned the switch on and off several times to no avail. I was thinking it may have been a fuse, but I can't for the life of me find the fuse box.

Could you please give me some advice, I have for ages wanted a mini, (especially after mum told me about her mini she bought new in the mid 60's when she was at uni). I just hope that mine is up to par.

The owner didn't know anything about it (engine size, type etc) it was her son's, who isn't around any more.
All I know (from the compliance plate) is that it is a Leyland Mini built in 8/78. It has an "S" badge on the front and rear. Oh, and it's bright purple.
As I said, I will put up some pics of the engine and car tonight and hopefully all you experts can let me know exactly what I bought.

Thank you in advance for your time.

If the 78 Clubbies are anything like the 72 Clubbies (which is wat my baby is!) the fuse box will be on the drivers side up the back on the inner guard.
My wipers decide not to work so you may need to replace the fuse, mine only has 2 fuses so its easy to tell wat one is rooted lol.
Your Clubbie sounds like an S and a very nice colour :D
Anyways hope this helps!

Lynda

fill out your location in your profile so we know where you are. That way someone may be able to pop around and help you out.

If the car has been sitting a long time then flush the old fuel out and put fresh stuff in.

Thanks for the help you two, I can't wait to get home and have a play with her.

I'll try the fuses and hopefully that's all it is. A mate suggested that it may even be a wiper motor, but it would be very strange for it to die just like that. The water squirters still work and I would have thought that they'd be on the same fuse.. Will find out soon enough though.

I doubt too many mini owners are around my neck of the woods. I am in Emerald which is a small mining/farming town in Central QLD.

I'll put some BP Ultimate in her this afternoon and have a look and see if I can see the fuel filter and maybe change that.

It's such great fun to drive! Thanks again. In fact, I may even duck home and get some pics now as it's just hit lunchtime.

Cheers,
David

Good advice that :!: :D half the problems I have getting minis to go now are due to stale fuel.

That will tell how often I get to drive one of my minis     (They are at my parents place)

Oh try to get the timing checked as well, replace the spark plugs, change the points, check that the air filter is not all blocked up, perhaps do an oil change, check the dashpot in the carby has oil, check the fuel filter maybe? running out of suggestions....
Um most of those things ^ are cheapish and relatively easy to do and it can make a remarkable difference to how your car drives, even if they are not broken it lets you know where you are up to with your car.

Thanks fuzzy-hair-man, I will give all of these a go this afternoon.

I put 5 litres of Optimax in but she's not even firing now, it is turning over and sounds like she wants to fire but can't get her to kick over.

The leads look a bit old and dodgy so I'll replace them asap along with the plugs, the fuel in the filter looks clean enough, but I may as well change it too just in case.

With the carby, I unscrewed/pulled out a "thing" (had a small bulb on the end, smelt like fuel) guessing that this is the dashpot?

I only had a few minutes there to tinker around, I'll let everyone know how it goes this arvo.

I took a few photos of her (now known as Jaffa - due to the plates rather than the colour) and have posted them up on this site.

Check her out! :

Icarus,

My wipers get stuck up the top occaisonally, usually when I've turned them on when its not raining. Turns out it wasn't a fuse or anything like that, they were just stuck, and a just giving them a bit of a push will allow them to continue working as usual. Turns out my wiper blade was slightly too long and was getting caught on the rubber windscreen seal, just enough at just the right position to stop them working.

Cheers

Nice buy!

Judging by the dirt on the tyres (one side of the tires :P ) it's probably been sitting for some time!

Ok, a quick update.

I have changed the leads, plugs, fuel filter and hit the carby with cleaner. There was little to no fuel in the tank and I couldn't work out how to empty it so I have just put another 5 litres of BP Ultimate in.. But she still won't start. I have tried to push start her a few times, but she's just not firing!

I couldn't find the fuses under the dash either. The wipers are stuck fast.

It doesn't look like any fuel has come through the filter since I changed it so maybe fuel pump? I don't know.

I called RACQ and upgraded to Ultra as I wasn't covered as it is my alternate vehicle.. Only thing is that doesn't kick in until Sunday afternoon (72 hours).

I'll try the fuel now I think and see if I can syphon it all out. Other than that, I think I'll call it an afternoon. :)

Check behind ure dsh to check the previus owner didnt install any extra fuses.

I had most of my electrics fail in my clubbie, was a blown fuse that had been put in behind the light switches.

I had the same issue with the car stalling when it slowed down, turned out to b running waaaaaaaaaaaaay to rich.
