ffs. the fooking thing has split on me and seems to be crumbling away rather then pushing through.

Anger rising...

If I keep bashing is it eventually going to move or just be stuck there. Can't pull it out now as there's nothing to grip onto.

The pin is a pain but you must use a punch that is JUST smaller than the actual hole in the knuckle otherwise you will destroy the pin.

Punch towards the floor of your mini and it should just pop out. Car ramps are the way to go as there is bugger all room under there.

The kits for the rod box have not given me any problems at all(touch wood!) and found 2 x seals in there. I use dentist picks to get them out and a copper drift to insert the aluminium bush with the o-ring in it. Tthe supplied seal then goes in and followed by the hose looking thingy to keep it all in there. It is then a matter of reinstalling the rod knuckle and pin. A good trick is to insert a length of wirre through both cklevis pins and twist off. Stops the pin coming out and stops some of the slop and rattle in the knuckle itself.

I think i'm up for a new pin at this stage anyway. It split pretty easily when I first started hammering.

Just sliced off a nice slither of my forefinger so I think I'm done for the day. Will have a go at it tommorow. I can't get the pin to budge, it just seems to be squashing away.

Feel sorry for you Shard
What a PITA

Once you get it back together, I'm a big fan of putting a small cable tie (or tie wire) right through the pin & around one side to stop the pin ever working loose.

"Can't happen" you say? Happened to me on a gravel track in the hills (wanted to be a rally driver like Juha Kankinen). Managed to fix it in the dark with a bit of old fencing wire & limp home using only 1st & 2nd :x

:( Sorry to hear about that shard...

Are you using the right punch size? It has to be just smaller than the pin as described earlier. As I said, it's a bloody tight fit to say the least...

Is the hole lining up on the other side (ie, straight through?) if not it could just be that you are hitting the other side of the bush and not getting it through the hole (I hope you understand what I mean)

Just use a BFH and go hard at it!

I don't know if it was the right size, but it seemed to fit in the spline hole just so I figured it'd work. Guessing I shouldn't have used a blunt pointy punch though as that split the pin in 2-3 hits.

Will check out bunnings tommorow and buy some similar size flat punchs (and a better hammer) before trying to get it out tommorow afternoon.

it's fooked .

Went out to bunnings and made sure I had the right size pin (3/16) and proceeded to bash away still no avail. I've got one half bashed down to what feels like halfway, and the other half still sticking out a bit over the spline itself. No matter how far in the pushed in bit is bashed in though I can't get anything out of the otherside!

If the original punch I used has pushed the pin harder against the spline and made it tighter then it already is (no amount of hammering and swearing seems to be able to budge it even a little out the other side) what are my options?

Can't drive it to a mech (well i could but i'd have to refill it with oil which seems like a waste as they'd have to drain it out again.

Shard

(ps. I know i should have used a 3/16 flat pin punch to begin with, hindsight sucks :x)

Shard maaate.............no more swearing or bloodied knuckles coz the only thing that affects is your hypertension.

Have you got a selection of drills in the garage that you don't use any more? Go have a look..............select the one which is a bees dick smaller than the hole........put the shank end into the hole and bash away with the old FBH on the pointy end of the drill.............eh voila

Oh, and dont forget to do this with the car up on ramps and in reverse gear.

Good luck

Shard and I had a long conversation yesterday on the phone. I suggested that he try to remove the other pin and unscrew the whole gear change and take it out of the car. That way on the bench you can do what you like with ease... including drill!

Ok got the bugger out woohoo. After a bit of a cleanup I found the other pin and got that out pretty easy, then removed the rod assembly and belted out the other one. Going to have to fit a new cover for the rod too as the end I used the wrong punch on is warped a bit :/.

With the oil seals, do I just oil them up a bit and slip them on? Manual goes on about service tools etc but I'm guessing that's just to minimise wear as the selector shaft itself is a bit gritty (is it ok to clean it?)

Get everything spotlessly clean... I have only one word for you mate, WD40  Better yet degrease it all and hose it out.

Don't oil the seal, just slide it on, then use a deep socket that is larger than the gear change rod and use that to hit it in. Make sure everything is spotless so that it won't leak again for awhile (ie. About 36 hours   )

Swoit.

Will grab some more supplies tonight along witha few rolls of paper towels and attack it tommorow. I've noticed the exsisting ring is right up against the end of the selector shaft, i'm guessing that means there's a good chance there's already multiple seals in there (?).

If I were you, I'd drill the old one(s) out and buy 2 new seals (yes 2, not 1) 1 will last you all of about 12 hours before it start to leak again, at least 2 will give you double that time  Make sure all the oil has been drained cause it will start spewing out!

Extract it all out by drilling a hole in the seal and screwing in a self tapper and getting it out that way. Just be REALLY careful not to drill into the gearbox casing or rod

Degrease the lot. Basically if any dirt gets in between the seal and the housing then it all that work will be for nothing!

Yeah I bought two seals just in case anyway. Will pry out the old one(s) tommorow and whack in the new lot cheers.

Had a good look at the suspension components while it's still up as well today, most of the rubbers are stuffed and the passenger side knuckle cover is absolutely squashed in . I have a feeling that's why the car was pulling left when I drove it home from the owners house. I think suspension overhaul is a bit over my head though :?.
