do you start from the top with the rope, or the bottom?

All mine start at the bottom in the middle, It really depends on where you want it to start.
I got all of mine replaced when I got a new front window cost me $20 on top of the new laminated screen ($160) at w/screen obriens, It took us close enought to 2hrs to get all the cord back in without the tool, it took the guy at obriens all of 1min for all 3 (front & sides) man what a difference the right tool makes eh

The joins at the top, so you start at the bottom and work your way around. Roping will work, but just make sure you use decent size stuff, as the have a tendancy to bite into rubbers and chew em up! not good when you just spent so much on new ones.

ok so the join in the rubber goes at the top of the screen?

Do you feed the rope into the rubber, then place the screen with rubber and rope on the car and pull the rope from the inside, starting at the bottom??

I did it this way about 10 years ago. Not sure if it's right.

what about silicone? do you put a bead of silicone on the car before placing the screen / rubber in place?

NEVER use silicone on the body of a car. Silicone is acidic. The only sealant I would use is Selley's DMastic. Mil-S-8802 B-2 would probably work, but I doubt you ever wanna touch GOOP again in yer life hehehehe.

easiest way to place yer rope in is grab a spare nozzle off a caulking gun, and run the rope through it. Knot both ends of your rope so it cant fall off. All you do is start the rope, and drag the nozzle around the glass. Seats it right in the bottom of the groove. go past the point where you started when you get right around, to avoid missing a section of rubber when you pull it in.

I used to place the rubber on the screen, Rope it up, and tape the ends of the rope to the inside of the screen. I would then place a decent bead of DMastic on the seal. Lift the screen in, the slowly pull the rope, working the rubber right over the lip behind it. Do the bottom edge, and corners first, then up the sides and finally across the top. Try to avoid finishing right in the middle at the top as it is the most likely point for it to crack through with the last bit of rope. Give the window a light tap around the seal with a flat hand to set it right in the body. DO NOT HIT THE WINDOW WHILE STILL ROPING IT IN OR THE SEAL IS COMPLETELY ENGAGED OVER THE LIP
Shove the Dmastic between the seal, and the body until it squeezes out. Then squeeze a bead between the glass and the seal. Fit your locking strip which will squeeze excess Mastic out. Push down on the seal to get that little bit extra out, which always seems to appear after a couple weeks., Clean up with Kero, and glass cleaner. All done :-)

EDIT.........Having a second person to keep light pressure on the window, following the rope also helps the seal seat in properly.

Cheers Phill, much appreciated advice. Makka, I know that black stuff, maybe it's the same stuff Phill is talking about. It's like a gooey tar kind of stuff, is it not? Damn messy if you get it on your hands....

Selley's DMastic is the product used by Windscreen's Obrien for installation of rubber seals.

Bostik Butyl Kits, are used for vehicles such as Kingswoods etc, it is like a thick tape which may have a wire running through it to help soften it for installation.

Modern cars like new commodores and falcons are installed using Urethane. When I was working there Obrien's was using Essex Urethane, which was the OEM sealant at the time. I found out later that since Sika has been supplying a body primer, Obrien's are now using Sikaflex. If ya get urethane on yer clothes it DOESNT COME OUT
