Hey guys,

I noticed that when I removed the driveshaft, CV and all from my drum brake swivel hubs that there are no dust seals or anything sitting between the CV and the bearing. In fact, the bearing is in plain sight. I greased it up but didn't repack the bearings as it seemed to be ok. Should I bother putting in bearing seals? what do these do? is there any advantage of putting in seals on the CV side without seals on the outer hub, near the hub nut?

Or should I pull everything apart and install bearing seals on both sides and repack the bearings?

I picked up 4 seals from my local bearing place last week for $22.

I dunno if its absolutely necessary but since I'm forking out the shells for new wheel bearings and flanges I figured I'd better do the right job of it.

4 seals... but that means I have to pull out the bearings to put in the outer seal right?

Not sure if that is worth it if the bearings themselves have been without seals for 36 years...

yeh u havve to take the outer race of the bearing off the drive flange ( drum brake only ) the seals are a must also i got seals from karcraft fot $2 each

you dont need to remove the bearings to put the seals in seals are behind the bearing to stop water and crude getting in

Anonymous moderation means the agro that is built up towards the mods isn't aimed at an individual (fewer "Makk" attacks). Less stress for mods means less moderator "retirements".

yeh but on the drum drive flanges the seals go on then the outer bearing is pressed onto the flanfge over the seal

I have inner and outer seals fitted to mine. All it should take is undoing the upper and lower taper pins, the steering tie rod end, and the Hub nut. Swing the drum away, and you should have easy access to the bearings and seals. My bearings were not tight on the drive flange. I assembled them in the drum, then slid it all on, keeping the spacer lined up
