Im hoping to finally weld in my boot floor tomorrow..YAY!

However my battery box is also looking quite dismal....I was considering simply wleding in a flat panel and using for example and marine battery box rather than having the actual battery box which sits below floor level....

What do others think...good idea/bad idea?

It depends on how much room you want in your boot?
Good idea if you dont require all the room..
But if you do weld a flat plate over it and use a new battery box in your boot you might need to extend the cables to suit, from memory they are only just long enought to fit where the battery is now??

Why not do what I did, it was rusted out the bottom..
I cut all the bottom of the box out except for 3mm all round, then dropped a flat 2mm steel plate in there and welded it all around.
Painted it all up, a bit of body proofing spray and it looks like a bought one!

I'd keep it low, lowers the centre of gravity... 8)

The biggest PITA for the batttery is checking the levels - you have to practically climb right in the boot to do it. If you had it higher you would not be able to get over the top of it to see properly I would imagine.

Slight Hijack- I have a new battery box to replace the HOS that's there now. Instead of welding would sealing the lip with mastic and pop riviting it in be OK or is there some mechanical advantage in welding?

David, use Mini timing check technology.. called a mirror...

Just be very careful which way you point the mirror tho Wombat... :wink:

As for pop riviting a new battery box in instead of welding, I can't see a problem with that. The old battery box isn't used for any body or structurally support that I can see.

Batteries are fairly heavy. I wonder if the pop rivets might not work loose over a period of time. Sikkaflex and pop rivets might be ok. Battery acid might affect the pop rivets over time as well.

If you MUST use pop rivets there I'd go for S/S ones.... and I'll second the Sikaflex. Or any good adhesive really. 8)

If there is any battery fluid in there anyways its prob time to change your battery... Pop rivets and sikaflex should work fine it just wont look the best

Small space...corrosive battery fumes..stainless pop-rivetts (thumbs up) the holes you drill for them (thumbs down :( )

heavy battery :!: ...get it welded in if you can :idea:

I used to own an MX-5 with the sealed battery in the boot. I was told it had to be sealed to prevent the fumes from getting into the boot.
At the risk of asking a dumb question, are sealed batteries being used in Minis in order to reduce the risk of corrosion? :?

Nope, never seen a sealed battery in a road Mini... and the boot is not sealed off from the cabin, either. :lol:
