I had a look at my twin 11/4 carbies last night thinking of putting em on the engine this weekend and I noticed the alloy manifold is all over the place. It seems that bits of alloy that would sit flush against the head have been snapped off. This is the same on both inlet ports. I don't think I can bolt them to the head very securly.
Anyone know why this would be like this? Maybe off another car and snapped to fit a mini. It looks like it has been like that for a really long time.

Nah I gots no digital camera.

I'm going shopping this arvo at link automotive in mitcham for extractors and other miscellaneous engine related hardware and advice. I'll take the carbs and manifold along to them and see what they make of it.

The manifolds for 998 Cooper and 1275 S didn't sit on the studs- they had tube rings inside the manifold & head ports to locate them, and the 4 big thick flat washers held them to the head.

Bad news......
They suggested the manifold is just shagged. Broken in some sort of strange manifold breaking accident.
They also suggested all the linkages are shagged too. And the carbies have been screwed with and have weird gear going on everywhere.
So after evaluating my options and speaking with them it was suggested to give up on the twins and get a reconditioned reliable 11/2" su.
With this, an inlet manifold, a good sports air filter, a set of vanilla LCB extractors going into a 13/4" pipe, muffler, exhaust. etc. $650 all up.
What do you think of the setup on an 1100 with a 12G295 head?
Am I going down the right track? :?

Nah... if you want a 1098 to breathe deep, you want better than 1x HS4 carb..
Think HIF44, or HS6, or Weber or Dellorto... 8)

Sounds pricey to me what you listed?? :?

I know nothing of Delorto. Weber carbies I've heard are a pain to setup.
su's look cool especially twins. IMHO.

I really just wanna get the show on the road to be honest. I have had this project sitting in my parents garage for 4 years squeezed in without an inch to spare with dads MG magnette (Cool looking car). I really just wanna get it running first up and be able to drive it to my house. It needs sooooooooo much work. Everything is out. I bought it that way stupidly. I keep finding stuff missing. I can never find bolts nor do I know which is which. I just wanna drive my mini.
This site is now my motivation. Nothing like talking about minis with other mini people to up the motivation.
Big costs and big setbacks are sucking away my motivation and making it hard to justify to my wife.

Thanks for the shoulder to cry on guys.

I also recomend a HIF44 I put one on the wifes 1100 and have had no dramers with it...just make sure it right first

But

I am also going the Delloroto rout..once again..its just the fiddeling to get it right first...you have to do the same with any Carb

$650 for a manifold, rebuilt carb, LCBs, zorst, muffler?

Sounds alright to me, especially if you just wanna get it going. I have a Weber on my car, and whilst they are an extremely good carby, the price of a setup to start afresh is too much for me. (Mine was on my car when purchased)

Go the good 'ol SU. A 998 with SU gets me to work everyday just fine.

45 DCOE Weber $300
Manifold $200
Linkage kit $80
Correct (until dynoed) set up ie jets etc etc $385 PLUS chokes, ramtubes and socks!!!!

Mate I'd go to the wrecker get an old 1.75 inch SU off an old BMC car, OA6 needle, ramflo filter on an 1.5 cut down manifold, Ebay used extractors and Roberts your mother's brother!!!!!!!!

Well, if you take Josh's Dello as an example-

S/H 40DHLA Dellorto carb, $100
Fuel Miser repair kit, + jets & emulsion tubes to suit Mini, $100
Manifold- Redline 3005 NEW, $160
Lynx Ramflo filter NEW, $45

Total $405 + the linkage kit $??

Not bad and it goes bloody hard.

I wouldn't pay silly money for an HS4 SU, recond or not- there are piles of those out there which a $30 repair kit will fix..
