what sort of signs do i look out for if its going to die? it seems to run alright at the moment, how can you tell if its lean? and could i adjust it myself to get it to a mini place safely?

No need to panic Morrie....you did ask tho....you could pull the plugs after a Highway blast....if they are white and the insulators look like they have been overheated ....well you could have a problem....

Just carefully drive it to a place where they know whats what and get it sorted....then you and the car will breath easy :D

Try doing a search for thermo fans cause some where in this wealth of Mini Information Being ausmini there is a photo of someones thermo setup.
From memory it sits between the radiatior and the left guard and it looks good and apperently fits as though it was ment to be

do you think that grille 'bashed in' so the fan will fit? how do you know which one to get or do you just measure the 'grille" and get an appropriate sized one from supercheap?

I would cut that grille to clear the fan, not just bash it...
I've got one here, if I ever get an overheating prob in my 1360 with its Deluxe radiator, I might fit it... :lol:

Seriously, the best cooling mod, IMO is an aux radiator. Use a heater core mounted behind the front grille, or fit a $50? MiniMatic fresh air heater under bonnet (like mine). 8)

Assuming that your problem is not fuel related, definately try an auxillary cooler like DrMini says.... another thing, an oil cooler may also help you but I'm not 100% sure about that....

Regarding a thermo fan, try here....

Its a genuine Rover mini item, and it comes with the bottom radiator hose and the correct thermo switch for the fan. This one goes on the "other" side of the inner guard (between the guard and the tyre).

And before anybody else says it.... yes you can buy OTHER fans cheaper.... this one is designed to fit though.

BUT FIRST :!:

Find out what the real problem is....it may just be that the engine was lying around a long time before the rebuild and cobwebs have built up inside it ....so you have to blow the cobwebs out :shock: :lol:

It could even be something as simple as the radiator cap setup....

yeah,,,well,,,the very first thing to do is to have it diagnosed "Proply" first

Thermo fans are only really any help in stop/start traffic situations,,,that is if all else is in perfect working order

i don`t use a thermo fan, never ever needed one,,,minis do tend to heat up a little in stop/start traffic but shouldn`t really propose any dramas, "IF" everything is set up perfect, they can take a little heat in traffic,,,BUT!!! if it`s heating up really high while driving along & then getting even hotter (Like into the red "H" mark ) while stationary, then you may very well have a problem,,,BUT!!! 140deg,,,??? do you mean in "F" scale or "C" scale???

82 = approx 180 ,,,so 140 shouldn`t be too hot,,,more like too cold,,,you may have a rad cap problem &&&& running too cold ?????

as 9yatah says (smart fella) :-) it could be easy fixed...just don`t jump to eveyone elses comclusions before it`s diagnosed """Properly""" first !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Most important!!!!!)

the gauge reads in celcius... :? could the sender be for a farenhite gauge?

i tested it in some boiling / near boiling water and it read 90 degrees which is pretty accurate :shock: if it is accurate then i really have a problem dont i. but that was water and i have coolant in the car.

Drive it like ya stole it :!:

nah just stroke it along and keep and eye on the guages....is the oil pressure dropping when you are reading these high temps :?:

Frequently check all fluid levels...but not when its hot mate...safety first :wink: and look for anything unusual like mayo in your radiator coolant...Minis are meant to be enjoyed..even when they aren't quite right...
