I have a little problem with my gearbox. Namely it has dropped a bearing. Can anyone give me a round figure for a rebuild so i know how much i will be saving for. At the moment the beast has been laid up for a while and i really should get on the case.
Cheers Mike

depends on what you call a rebuild and how much you do yourself. Do it yourself and as long as all the gears and most of the other bearing are ok. It'll cost you a set of Balk rings $120. Layshaft $100, Big end Bearing $30-40, Misc bearings another $100 maybe. Gaskets to put it all back together. $20.
If your not doing it yourself, you can be charged anything from $500 to $2000 depending on how much work they have to do.

Cheers

Aaron

You can get a gearbox bearing kit in Sydney from Karcraft or MG Heritage for ~$140. This does not include the 2 idler gear needle bearings, or the 2 diff bearings (which seldom wear).

I'd budget for a new (competition grade) diff pin too ($51), and 2 new diff planet gears $26 ea). On old boxes they are invariably worn. If they break, they do a lot of damage.

I've just done mine.

For reco'ing the box only (take the complete box as is there) was about $900-$1000 inlcuding labour. All up, which included taking the engine out, splitting the box from the engine, refitting the box, adjusting clutch, new timing chain (not gearbox related) and other little stuff like engine steady bushes and stuff, it was $1400-$1500.

Edit/ didn't quite finnish, hehe...

It done the bearing on one end of the layshaft, which destroyed the layshaft, 2nd gear and the cluster gear. Slightly worse than we first thought! The clutch was as new, and was a Borg and Beck, so I didn't need to replace that (only bit of good news, hehe).
