 Post subject: Clutch Bleed Problems

Hi all, (Warning long one)

I replaced the clutch actuator, top and bottom clevis pins, pedal clevis pin, and return spring plate. Everything is in and is great, Makka helped me bleed her the old down up method.

When I stepped on the clutch the other night it felt completely spongy... like there was no fluid in there at all. So i thought it was air. I got my mate around, connected a hose this time and bled the clutch, surprise surprise, air! so all's good, i kept going, topped the fluid, kept bleeding until I was pretty sure there was no more air using:

"Slowly down", untighten bleed screw, "OK it's down" tight bleed screw, "up" "up"

did this about 20 times and travel was tighter etc.

I adjusted the travel adjuster nut by stepping on the clutch all the way down and set the screw to clearance stated in the Hanes manual (around 1mm)

Now here's the problem. There is no clutch travel!!! it's now like 1 inch and feels really tight as apposed to 3-4 inches of travel. It's as if no fuild is going anywhere in the system. So I bleed it again and as he steps down on the clutch and I undo the screw the travel is "righted" again and there is long clutch travel. As soon as I do up the bleed screw the pedal is tight again! like there is no clutch movement. It feels like the brake pedal, super tight! I have lots of fluid in the master cylinder.

What am I doing wrong? is it to do with the travel adjustment screw? what about the throwout stop nut??

Are you talking about the throw out stop or the clutch arm stop? The throw out stop is the big nut (15/16 I think) and securing nut on top of it at the end of the clutch cover. Half of the cars drive without it anyways. I find that no matter what Haynes says about it the all the way to the end and half turn back method is not enough and your clutch gets very stiff when the nut is so close to the plate. Press the clutch in (make sure its absolutely in) and turn the nut a good few turns away from the clutch cover. Youll see that shifting is much impoved and trere's no harm (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) in having the throw out stop further out.

Yes, I woke up this morning and realised what my problem is, the throw out stop nut (big ass nut on the far left) is too close to the clutch cover plate. The clearance is not enough to give the clutch good travel. Amazing what a good night's sleep can do! :wink:
