Hi 68Deluxe,

I have a 68 deluxe of my own and a few years ago the drum brakes failed big time. Luckily while it was parked  I came out one morning to find all the brake fluid around the right front wheel. Both drums were warped and the rear lines were blocked solid, drums badly scored. I bit the bullet & bought discs (cooper S). She stops Damn Quick now, and the 1275 I'm half way through with can just drop straight in!!

I run her on cooper S 4.5" steelies, looks sweeeeeeet!! Legal & no probs about the wheels cracking etc.

OH, & no flares. Mainly cos I LOVE the classic straight sided look, and how the car sits with the edge of the tyres just at the edge of the bodyline.... MMMMMM!!

PS, Cooper S 7.5" discs can always be flogged off for about the same you paid for em (keep yer drums) so you get yer money back!!

Good luck deciding...

P.S. Go the wet girls every time!!

Cheers
Matt

I understand what you are saying. It's not that I am bagging out flares, or S's or whatevre, I am asking people to help me make a descision whether I should just go honda discs now (that need flares) or save and keep it original clean straight lines.

I think I will try my best for non flared look. I will see how I go with sourcing 7.5" brakes, it will be a long mission but I'll get there one day...

Hey Chong, Doc's Honda disc conversion sounds great in theory, but you will have to get someone to do your machining work for you, unless you have a lathe and mill. Also, you will need an engineers cert (not sure how much they are, but they aint free)

If you are keeping the car long term, save your bikkies and buy genuine brakes. If you look hard enough you will get what you want for a good price.

Patience is a virtue! 8)

Hey matt, you must have posted same time as my last post...

Yeah i will look long and hard for 7.5". I think my final option will be to buy new from UK for around $1400, bearings, ball joints, flanges and all. My work collegue will be coming from UK near the end of the year so I will get him to drag them over in exchange for a few beers

Thanks all for your input.

Maybe my next mini I'll have to do it up with flares, hondas and a starlet turbo conversion

so if someone was to bring a full disc conversion from UK to OZ in a bag on a plane, do you think when the bag is x-rayed they would open it up and take a look?

I want to get my brother to bring stuff back from the UK when he next visits us in OZ...like 1 suitcase full of parts...

Talk to Gareth (gareth_1330) at Mini Spares & Repairs, I think he's getting a few Honda kits together.

Flares have one advantage - some small protection of the main body paint from carpark accidents!

Years ago I backed the van out in a hurry and connected the right front flare (black plastic flares) with the left rear bumper of my wife's Hyundai Excel. :(

Fortunately the only damage was a black mark on the Excel's bumper from the flare. The mark polished off too. If I hadn't the flares I'm sure paint damage to both cars would have resulted.

But the Traveller will probably be flare-less, as I want that stock look. 8)

Yeah I want stock look too... but I also want kick ass stopping power at low cost...

I don't plan on needing "flare paint protection"

been a coupla mentions here about needing discs (by law) to put a 1275 in. Depending where you are that may be not be true. I spoke to the transport dept here in Perth when I was thinking about putting a 1275 in the 65 Deluxe i used to have and they said it doesn't matter whether its discs or drums, as long as they work efficiently. People say that drums can be made to work very well (for a lot less cost than buying discs i'd imagine).
But then if you're after ultimate braking, discs are probably still your best bet...

You won't get it passed in NSW with 1275 without discs of some sort. Because they know all the 1275s had discs...

I lived in Adelaide for a while, and people used to say the same thing there. I don't know if it was fact or just an assumption that they'd have the same rules as Sydney. (outside nsw) i'd suggest people check with the local transport dept to be sure.
When I spoke to the guy here, he said they didn't care if all 1275's came with discs from the factory, they just check if the brakes are efficient and safe and if so they'll pass it...

When I put the 1310 in mine, they looked, and said they wouldn't have passed it with drums.
That was 9 years ago- they are more picky now.

The fact of the matter is, I don't feel safe driving in Sydney with all the lunatics out there on my drums, with or without a 1275 as it is! It's not my driving skills that i question, it's all the 4WD soccer mums out there that I question!

Quick to go, quick to stop, there is no other way in this conrete jungle! Esp with thise blardy WRX's buzzing around and corollas suddenly changing lanes without indicating...
