Hey I drove your car, those drums on yours are pretty good!
You should try driving on bad ones... will it stop?.. will it dive right then left, or left then right?

Other big advantage of discs (apart from stopping straight)- they adjust themselves.. so you're not under the car every other weekend trying to adjust the *@^*!? front drums..

Yeah you were saying that my drums stopped pretty good... hrmmm, you have to give me a go on your car next time, just up the street and back... I need to check out what discs are all about...

Problem is i've never driven another mini to know what good is and what bad is...

When cold, your drums are better than my S discs with Greenstuffs and no servo.
(but Honda Civic discs are way better).

But at 95MPH at the end of Wakefield Pk straight, I'll take my discs over your drums...

Hey guys, back on Page 3 I have a pic of one of my wheels, can someone please tell me what offset they are??

The lumps in the spokes are not flush with the rim. The wheels are offset out a little further, making them almost perfectly inline with the body.

Yeah they are `Mini offset', made for early Minis with non-spacer drums- but they look sweet with spacer drums and S or Honda brakes inside. need Inno or S flares then though... 8)

Usual disclaimer- don't blame me if, blah blah...

OK you need:
1 pair of Civic or City discs & calipers fom an 83?-87 Honda (earlier/later may be OK too). No you don't need the Honda brake hoses or the hubs, but keep the 12mm bolts you will need them.

I drum brake Mini (U got that..)

2 mounting plates 8mm thick MS for the calipers- these bolt on the drum brake swivel hubs in place of the existing backplates. Have to make- see Honda brake thread. Buy 3 new mounting bolts 5/16" UNF x 3/4" long- grade 5, 8 or Unbrako cap screws.

2 extra copper 3/8" copper washers to seal the Mini brake hoses on the Honda calipers. The threads fit pretty well, but the end of the last thread on the hose will stop it sealing unless you fit 2 washers. (S calipers are counterbored to clear but Honda are not, that's why).

Machining:
1. Bore the centre of the disc to 65.0mm
2. Turn the shoulder on front of the drum Mini drive flange to 65.0mm. Disc will now locate properly and not `run out' (wobble).
3. Drill the Honda disc for Mini stud pattern- 4 holes 10.0mm dia on 4" (101.6mm) PCD. Also drill two 7mm holes for the csk screws. Use an old drive flange for a drill jig.
4. Make 2 alloy spacers 130mm OD x 74mm ID x 25mm thick. Drill stud and screw holes as above. OR you can butcher some spacer drums to get the spacer bit... heavier though.
5. Fit Cooper S / (or Clubbie S) rear wheel studs to the drive flanges.
6. Carefully grind the little lugs off the back of the calipers where the hoses go. Don't mark the sealing face..

This is all you need to fit 9" discs with 12" or 13" wheels. Hub offset will be the same as Cooper S brakes.

If going for 10" wheels there's a little extra to do:
1. Machine disc diameter down to 7.9"
2. grind away the inside of the outer brake pad to miss the bell section of the disc
3. Trial fit the wheel (Mini offset Contessa or similar) onto the hub & caliper assembly. A little grinding will be needed to the caliper pin bracket and perhaps the claw of the caliper. There's no brake fluid in there, so a little fettling is OK.
8)

Put 12x5" Performance mags on it, 9" Honda discs, NO SPACERS, NO FLARES, and it'll look `stock' but outstop everybody running those piss-weak 7.5 and 8.4" discs... :P .

Thats precisely what I'm going to do!

My Mini is on the road!!! :D :D :D

OMG after how many weeks! I even fit a new rod change seal and a clubman belows over the changer mechanism. New plugs, HPR30 oil and she's running great! Thanks to everyone for helping me out!!! I feel tired, but accomplished everything I set out to do!

Kev: NO MORE CLONKING! It's just like you said! Fix the pot joints, she'll be fine... Good Onya!

Makka: I did it! I found a ball joint splitter! drove half way around Sydney but I got it!

Now, i took her for a longish spin and I realised that she stops pretty good actually... The drums are quite ok, not outstanding but does a pretty good job. Having read your post though Doc, I am sold... I am gonna save and buy 12x5s and 9inch hondas... I reviewed the condition of my LS contessas and I am sick of thinking about second hand wheels so $680 for 12x5s from Tempe Tyres it is!

OMG you don't know what it feels like to drive your car after weeks of working on it! hours under the car, $$$ and time... so fulfilling!

I'll say what i've said in the other honda topic....

If the moke 8.4 disc setup can lock the front tyres, but i wanted to stop quicker, i wouldnt upgrade to the honda disc setup... thats just dumb... the problem is in the tyres.

If the tyres dont grip under braking they will lock up and slide. In which case the tyre grip threshold has been exceeded. Bigger brakes aint gonna fix this..

A good set of tyres on the 8.4 moke setup would work just fine..

But of course, if i was given a lathe for my birthday, my opinion would change  until then... it'd take too long to do, and moke 8.4's are a straight bolt on. I cant be bothered waiting for someone to MAKE a set up...

Sorry, its after 5am, gettin cranky cos its my bed time...
