Good onya...getting your hand dirty
It's the only way to learn is to throw your self into it and do it your self with freinds
I had never done it before but now I have done a couple and can't wait to do the next two

And when did you come to this decision? I was only talking to you at 10am and you were still talking about it getting built to take a supercharger.
Oh well it's more fun when you do it yourself anyway.
When you fire him up for the first time, after getting the distrubutor in the wrong way (nearly always happens) you will have the biggest grin for a week especially when you get Slidey to move under his own power again.

Yeah well that was BEFORE the trip to Mini Auto at Ipswich.............. in which i was told that a full rebuild will lighten my pocket by about 7-8k.....

Being early in the morning now, looking at the situation i still can't f&^king beleive the ass reaming i have recieved, and am looking at doing this less than 1500klms into running the current POS.........

F*^%$#g very unimpressed

Go on, you know you want to! between a few books, word of mouth and Ausmini you can build yourself a pretty darn hard running mini!

Besides, heaven forbid, if slidey ever has problems in the future you'll know how to fix it and do it for nix! It's a win win situation!

That is just wrong having that many minis in the one spot...lolol

SG - I wish you well in your endeavours as I am doing the same thing(rebuilding a motor myself). I am finding is sooo rewarding and doing everything slow time - it is a hoot and I swung off what JAM put forward as well. My biggest problem is the gearbox - black magic place those things - attempting my first one as we speak. Lost my patience last night as I was trying to remove that F%$king nut!!! off the input shaft. I will survive.

Hooroo

All the best with the re-build SG. I never wish anyone luck as I believe it to be a bad omen. But rather wish them all the best :).

But like JAM said if somethings worth doing then do it right the first time and use good components and there is nothing more rewarding that doing something yourself. Not only that you will save lots of money too. When I was younger I could never afford to pay mechanics to do things to my Minis. So I ended up having to do most work myself. Of course I had a great teacher in the form of my uncle and a friend who use to buy and wreck Mini's on the side. He knew everything about Minis and he had four huge sheds just full of every Mini part anyone could ever want.

Now I have a Mini again I wonder if I should contact him and see if he is still around :).

Also in regards to garages I dont think you can ever have a big enough garage. We have a double garage and I only just managed to squeeze Granny inside. Because of all the radio controlled cars, aircraft and other junk sitting in there. Time for a clean out I guess seeing how I have Granny now :).

Anyway all the best with the build SG and I hope it goes well for you.

Well, I'm guessin' you're known as the "white trash" of your street for a start!

When I do any work on my car I have to lay in the gravel across the street 'cos it's flatter than my car spot! I'm sure my neighbours are impressed with that!

Good to see a plan evolving sg.

Question: I can't figure for the life of me WHY mini engines are so expensive to rebuild (I've rebuilt 2 Windsors for less than what I heard quoted about mini engine rebuilds!!) Why so dear? Is there a militant mini-engine-builders union holding engine-houses to ransom?

Dont know about militants but seems to be a lot of ADF persons in here now. I might have to call a clear lower deck, muster both watches and splice the mainbrace...

Sorry - distracted again...

Yeah I dunno either... my 1360 got rebuilt (by me) for under $1400...
not including my labour.
And yes that included pistons, rebore, crank grind, cam grind, bearings, lifters, oil pump, balance, new clutch, blah blah...
Maybe engine builders get paid lots these days, unlike moi...
