Well originally I am from Hobart and I swear it is the city of Minis (well compared to Canberra it is). I have loved them ever since I can remember. Always been in love with early roundnose Minis, especially British Racing Green with a white roof. Before I bought mine, I always wanted the one that featured on the front cover of Just Cars years ago, BRG/white, gold contessas, absolutely sweet. I still have a pic of it somewhere....

It wasn't until I bought mine and got my licence that I found out how much fun they were! I love the handling (apart from accidently driving backwards into the side of a mountain, but live and learn I guess!)

Anto.

In 1966 I was just starting Uni and I needed a car. I was going to buy a "moded" FJ Holden for £80. When my mother saw it she had a fit and marched me off to the local BMC Dealer and bought a secondhand 850 for £400 which I had to pay back after I graduated.

Back in 1988 my first daughter was born and i had to get rid of my honda and by a car.
While looking around i found a 1964 850 van for i think $250. My dad had also two 850s,
one i cant remember but he bought it brand new when i was about 1 year old then he had a delux in about 1971. As the mini i was looking at was built in the same year i was born i just had to by it. I then found a 1969 delux with a crap body but it had a good 998,
cooper s dash and cooper s bumpers. I repainted the van in the back yard and tranplanted the engine and good bits over.
Sold the mini about 12 months later and got a stanza.
Then last year i was going to get my pilots licence which i had been nagging my wife for abut 5 years. I took my first flight then i saw an add in the paper for a 1976 Clubman for sale. The lady who owned it had just about fully rebuilt it and had gone out and bought a brand new cooper S. I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT.
I went to my wife and told her i would give uf flying if she let me get the mini.
SHE SAID YES

Not sure exactly HOW i got interested in minis... cos in high school all i wanted was a HQ Monaro or a HQ Sandman - i spent class after class dreaming of the final modification list for the Monaro... then for some reason i started cutting out pictures of minis from the library books.... i cant remember why though....oh well..

The first mini i bought was a red CLUBBY  (believe it or not), but it was for a friend who was looking for a car... bought it off a dodgey backyard mechanic who was also dodging up.... i mean "fixing" a Lotus Elise... this guy was dodgey as hell..

Took the mini for a test drive, and using my "library book knowledge", tested for anything i could think of... and it seemed quite good so i gave him the cash...

We ended up painting white GT stripes over the car with masking tape and spray cans, then went cruising an hour later (mozzies love wet paint at 60kmh  ) A few weeks later the exhaust snapped clean off while we passed a police car at Gleneg, they defected us, and then we managed to get pulled over every weekend after that. Most memorable moment was when we were racing DOWN a big windy road (the old freeway), only to run out of brakes at the final hairpin turn (doing 80kmh)... This car got us into so much trouble, but it was so much fun. The addiction started here.

MY own first mini was in a friends garage. I just quit my job, and predicted alot of spare time coming up, so i bought the spotless '63 850 for a grand. Just like everyone else, i eventually sold it, then realised i should have kept it....

In my early years, used to ride in my uncles's (he's only 2 years older!) Mk 1 'S' which was white with a union jack bonnet. One day driving past a car yard, spotted a Mk2 998 Cooper on the lot for $1800. Drove straight in with my Morris 1100, traded and became the owner of a 3 year old mint Mini Cooper, factory recling seats, black velour type carpets as it was an import . And so it began. A couple of years later traded on a 73 Oz Clubman GT (Hairy Lime) and am now on to numbers 4 & 5 Oz GT's! Only 2 regrets. First was losing the Cooper as it was last seen on a trailer as a burnt out wreck! Shed a tear that day, but how common would it be today and secondly was not knowing about one of the GT's - ignition in the centre dash panel and no headrests. This was one of the first 200 homogated for Bathurst and probably rarer than rocking horse s^*t now. Sold it for a freakin Escort van, fully carpeted in the back.........nudge, nudge, say no more!

Started driving in parents FJ then HR, drove lots and lots of miles (as they were in those days).

I started an apprenticeship in 1965 and the other two apprentices had a 997 Cooper, C/R box, Cam, exhaust, head work and ran on 4:1 fuel improver...the other appy had a 1200 Beetle....the tradesmen had things like 170 pursuit Coons........what do you think I went looking for when Mum and Dad said they would help me with a deposit!!!

Near new Light Blue Deluxe.......drove the wheels off it......some sneaky Bathurst laps etc ......drove from Sydney to Cairns and back at one stage. Could only afford to do smallish mods such as 5" rims and Michelin XZX tyres etc a lot of my friends at the time were right into mods and were often seen overhauling gearboxes for some reason....

Must check on the exact colour one day.........
