The battery in my clubman is just sitting there. I know there is supposed to be something that holds it down, just i dont know what. There is an eyelet in a metal part of the boot each side of the battery.
On the north most side there is a threaded rod that has a wing nut on it.
There isnt one on the other side.

Sorry no piccy tonite, but there are 2 eyebolts like you describe, with a bit of angle sheet metal between them. Also the battery used to have a cardboard cover and an elastic strap to hold that down.

IMPORTANT:
Cover the battery with something, even just a bit of old carpet. Otherwise metal things carried in the boot can short out the battery terminals.

My friend Josh managed to ARC WELD the jack to the battery terminals while negotiating a roundabout. Car stopped, big cloud of smoke in cabin, r**ted the battery from the instant discharge. Spoiled his whole day... Could have been worse, he had newspapers in the boot too..

How it works is the batery is held inplace by a metal plate, as Doc says, its basicaly just an angle of sheet metal running the lenght of the battery and sitting on the battery's corner. On both ends it has holes through which "J" bolts (a buck and something from any mini shop) pass and the J hook sits inside a catch and the end is held above the metal angle with a nut (wing nut is even better). Then there's a cardboard cover on top covering the battery from metal objects and a rubber strap (like you can buy from any supercheap\bunnings) holding the cover. Some people also put blocks of timber in the battery well to make it sit tight.

Yeah....I learnt this one the hard way...had a can of WD40 rolling raound my boot (for those rainy days) and it shorted across the battery.....got a hole in it ........let the contents out in the boot.......then a spark blow the bootlid off......... ..........at 100Km/h on the highway.

My ears were still ringing a day later I thought someone had crashed into me or something.

I pulled up on the side of the road...all by myself, (with a ringing in my ears and a little dazed )got out of the car.....and the bloody boot lid was gone!!!!!

It took me about 2 mins to work out what had happened, and then some guy came by and asked if I was OK (it was in the country) and told me that the lid was aways back down the road.

It was a major repair job.
New tanks, it was a cooper S, Panel beat everything!!, repaint

I put a cover over the battery after that

I'm glad I have a boot board seperating the luggage from the battery! I used to just have nothing but the battery (not even tied down), spare wheel and jack - the jack used to fly round everywhere! Solution - I no longer carry a jack

That's what the mobile phone is for! Unfortunately my original Mini jack is knackered (hence why it no longer travels in the boot) and the trolley jack is a touch on the large side!

One day you'll be out of phone range... 'ello? 'ello? Bah.....

A friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, almost did that - practising hand brake turns he knocked a tyre off the rim. He was only *just* in mobile phone range. He doesn't carry a jack, or a spare wheel for that matter!

I officially do not, and have never carried a jack, wheel wrench, or spare tyre in any of the cars i have owned.

Not ONE flatty in 8 years. I HAVE had screws in the tyres, but they never deflated. Touch wood.
