Does anyone know some places that sell second hand engines in Vic, specifically 1098cc ones for a '78 Leyland?

My car is blowing out smoke like nothing on earth, apparently at last the rings are gone. I can't afford to rebuild it with something better, so I was hoping to just get a replacement until cash becomes more available.

Any help is appreciated!

not trying to hijack, but what kind of prices are you expecting to pay for a replacement 1100?

i've been to northern mini, they basically have crate motors that are superlatively expensive, but in all different sizes.. not sure what they have in secondhand motors though.
they're in heidelberg... i'll see if i can dig up the number, unless someone beats me to it.

In all honesty, 2nd hand motors are a false economy, especially if you're handy enough with the spanners to change it yourself. Far better in thelong run to put up with the smoke, save up a bit more, and rebuild the block. Parts for 1098's are cheap, You could easily do it for under $500.

I'm not sure what kind of price - if I could get the current engine rebuilt for under 500 I would probably go for that instead.

If you do it all yourself, you could do rings & bearings at that price.
But if a 1098 is real smoky usually the bores are worn too, and the pistons... so by the time you buy O/S pistons & rebore it you can kiss another $400 goodbye.

Pull your head off and have a look inside. Could be that it's the rings on all or just one. If you want economy buy a whole wreck and use the engine and sell the rest to recover costs.

The thing is that any second hand engines are going to be atleast 27 years old. Anything newer has been imported, and is pricey. You will be taking a chance in buying a second hand engine, a very big chance!

My Mini mechanic here in Geelong is getting in a container soonish (can't be sure, could be a few months). He will be selling "kits" of a 1275 A+ engine (one of 50,000km or less) which were checked over in england, and checked again once here, 8.4" discs and 12" rims for something like $3000 or $3500 (not exactally sure yet). Maybe that would be your best bet?

are you sure it isnt just worn valve stem seals that are creating the smoke?

$750-$1000 for a good 1100 was what i was quoted from various mini places.

I took that chance once ...... Once.

It only cost me $400 but it ended up costing me alot more than that in headaches ..... and oil!!

Add another 300-500 bucks to get the head crack tested, cleaned up and converted for unleaded - maybe? Worth while considering seeing you're re-building. But I guess if you're budget concious and don't have much time you probably wouldn't consider this.

You can still find good ones if you look. I sold Brad's good 1098 & rodchange to Duc, bloody orientals beat me down to $200...

Yeah but the challenge is knowing what to look for, and avoid.
My supposedly rebuilt secondhand engine wasn't that economical in the end. Although if the previous owner had used a new harmonic balancer I guess I'd still be driving it - then I wouldn't have the Ausmini spec beast I've got now though!

heh... just discovered my otherwise stock mini has a 1098, not a 998 like it should..

Your stock 73 should have an 1100 not a 998.

yeah and it should have cone springs too. guess what, it doesn't.
